Hi Guys, I`m new to the forum, and new to collecting silver eagles. I`m hoping someone will be able to answer a few questions I have on these beautiful coins... My question relates to mint marks. I believe that there are three in total S, P & W. Now I believe that these mint marks are on proof coins, yet I`ve seen several proof type eagles, with no mint marks, and I`ve also been told that the 2007 eagle, is being issued as BU, but with a W mint mark. Can anyone clarify this for me? Are any other years issued in BU type but with mint marks? Or is my information totally incorrect? Hope someone can help me out. GS.

That is a good reference for years & mintmarks, but keep in mind the prices on the PCGS site are a bit....."optimistic".

Hello GS and welcome to the forum. you are in the midst of a lot of guy and gals that are more than willing to give you all the info you can handle. as for your ASE's as far as I know there are no P mint marks. the Philly mint has no mint mark on the coin. the W is for west point and in 07 they added the W to some BU coins but not all. the S is San Fransisco and S makes the Proof coins. I believe that starting in 2000 or 2001 not positive which year it was but one of the two ALL BU eagles are made at West Point. someone else will have the correct year if I am wrong. welcome again and I hope I helped a little. ASE's are also my Favorite coin or the one that I have all of anyway lol. Gary too

Proof ASEs have S mintmark from 1986-1992, P mm from 1993-2000, and W mm from 2001-present. These are available directly from the US Mint.
The American Eagle Bullion Coins were minted in Philly without a mm from 1986-1999 and then at West Point without a mm from 2000-present. These are only available from secondary dealers and cannot be purchased from the US Mint.
The newest type is the American Eagle Uncirculated Coin. These debuted late 2006 with a W mm and a different finish from the regular bullion coins. These can be purchased directly from the US Mint and are meant to have a quality between proof and bullion.
I am not aware of any proofs without a mm. Another note is the fact that in 1995, there was also a proof with a W mm. Only 30,125 were minted and they were included with a four piece gold set. It sells for ~$5000.

Cheers Bruce, so I assume that W means proof issues & (W), means BU isses as well both will have the W mint mark?

Any thoughts?
Simple- it does not have a mintmark because the US Mint didnt make it, it is just a hunk of silver. The auction is very misleading- it is mentioned that it is from "a leading US mint" which is meant to confuse people with The US Mint. The US Mint only mints silver Eagles in a 1oz size, anything else was not minted by them. Also, it is overpriced by almost $100 based on silver value. quote: What does the (W) mean?
(W) means minted at West Point without a mintmark

biokemist6,
Gulp... how do you tell the difference. Am I right in thinking that any proof silver dollars without mint marks are, not legal tender. They would contain the silver ounce, but would only be a bullion coin, like the BU. How can they legaly make these? Is it from the Franklin mint do you think? Should I be avoiding unmint marked dollars like the plague, and only buy proof with the mint mark. I assume that none mint marked BU dollars are the genuine article? Or are there copies out there too!!!!!

Interestingly, I contacted the seller, and asked him about this, he/she stated, that they had never heard of eagle dollars with mint marks. When I pointed out S, P & W mints, I receieved no reply....suspicious, to say the least!!!

Legal tender is the key phrase here- any genuine silver Eagle will have a denomination of $1 regardless of whether a mintmark is present of not. As far as the "reproductions" go, they are legal as long as a denomination is not present. By law, a coin not minted by the US Mint that has a denomination on it must be prominently stamped "COPY" in accordance with the Hobby Protection Act. quote: Interestingly, I contacted the seller, and asked him about this, he/she stated, that they had never heard of eagle dollars with mint marks.
The seller is either clueless or lying. Either way, that is a seller to avoid.
