Continuing with the recent tradition of copying successful mints around the world in everything but competitive pricing, The Royal Mint is now doing Lunar Year coins, starting with the 2014 Year of the Horse.

The following coins have been announced so far, prices are in UK pounds. For US Dollars, add 60% to the number.

One Ounce Gold Proof - an eye watering £1950

Five Ounce Silver Proof - £450

One Ounce Silver Proof - £82.50

1/10 Ounce Gold Uncirculated - £225

I despair at those prices. Do you realise that living in the UK I could order the Australian version of the One Ounce Gold Proof and get it shipped all the way from the Perth Mint and it would be £500 cheaper. I'm not kidding.

You're not alone in that feeling. Despite whatever else may be said about The Royal Mint, their pricing (as you've previously noted) is badly disconnected from reality.

I like the coins. But its so hard to find dealers!

The way I look at it, the RCM should ask whatever they can for these coins and someone is paying them for it, otherwise they would have dropped their prices long ago.

You'd think for those prices they could have hired someone that had either actually seen or a horse or could do an above average stylised depiction of one - the chosen design is imo awful.

As for RM prices I can honestly say I've never purchased anything directly from them aside from the recent £20/£20 coin (I'm a sucker for Pistrucci's design), obviously enough people do but I find the secondary market generally way cheaper (I have my doubts about that being the case for the £20/£20 hence my purchasing directly).

Yup--- I asked The Royal Mint who serves as their US vendor(s) one time and they referred me to GovMint. You should try them. http://www.govmint.com
