You could cheapen shipping to zero. Force everyone who still wanted cents to drive to Denver or Philadelphia and pick them up themselves. Since practically no-one would want to do this, you'd also radically slash cent mintage at the same time.

Of course, doing so would be a de facto withdrawal of the penny, since the stockpiles in hand at the banks would last only a few weeks.

also, I know most everyone will not agree with me, but I like all pennies ..yes even the new shield pennies..so I dont mind finding them. the ones I dont like are 1983-2008 pennies. just worthless zinc memorials. 2009 has the lincoln reverse, which are always neat to find in circulation

@ nalaberong

Even if some of the new cents have poor strikes and minor errors, so what? The fact that the shields might have a little die crack, bad lamination, or some microscopic almost doubled die doesn't matter. They're not worth anything. I doubt this should affect older errors at all. The fact that some shield penny is minorly defective doesn't change the fact that a 1922 plain and a 1955 doubled die are both going to be worth 1000 plus dollars. And I don't know what you mean how this will change the thrill of the hunt, so please explain.

@ schris252

Think of it this way, would you rather find a shield penny or a Wheat penny? Exactly. The point is that the extremely high mintage of shield pennies are drowning out older coins because of inflation, inevitably raising their cost because of high production, then causing the question to be raised that we should eliminate the penny.

@ Sap

I agree eliminating shipping would have the same effect of canceling the coin altogether. Another problem would be the mass hoarding of the few pieces in circulation, similar to the 1955-S cent.

All errors will become more common, so the buyers who just want one example of a major error will buy a cheaper recent error, lessening the demand for older major errors. Finding errors all the time will make it less exciting...

Other than the fact that I would be able to finally complete another outdated modern series. I would love to see Jeffs and Rosies discontinued for the same reason not to mention these god-awful quarters.

I cannot imagine how it could personally affect me....even a little.

You're right amida17. It probably wouldn't affect you at all, except for everything you buy being rounded to the nearest dollar ! Seriously though, could you imagine, with no cents, nickels, dimes, and quarters how gas would cost? Just because the value is $2.51 we would have to pay the whole $3 a gallon! And I don't think halves are going to catch on again anytime soon, unless you're a silver CRHer!

I just found out that $43 million were cut from school budgets in 2012. When you take the other numbers I posted:

$146 million dollars to make the $60 million in pennies that we made in 2012. A net loss of $84 million that year.

When you think about the $43 million that were cut from the school budgets, does anyone REALLY think that cutting the penny wouldn't help the economy?

If you had two things on the chopping block, the penny and the school systems budget, which would you choose?

The government has spent $14 million dollars in catfish inspections, whatever those are. We also spent around $750,000 by the federal building of IHOPs in DC. Enough said, the list will go on and on. Just search wasteful government spending on the internet. If you add every single one of them up, we can fund public schools and justify the penny.

I can't fathom the logic you are trying to use.

How can wasting money on those things justify wasting money on the penny, or anything else? We shouldn't waste ANY money.

Imagine you where at a store were everything was useless and you didn't need it.

Would you justify paying wasting money on one of the items simply because you didn't buy any of the others? Keep in mind, you are buying these items with a credit card and paying interest on it indefinitely.

sure its fun to find wheats, but take for example the 1944 wheat. I have found tons of them CHR and in Circulation (of course in circ condition) and they are not worth anymore then the 2013 UNC shield today. sure copper value is worth maybe a cent or two over face, but until they legalize melting them down, it is worth $0.01. also, personally I would never melt down wheats. maybe 70s copper cents

and who knows? maybe one day they will make trillions of coins for the year 2200 and our 2013 shields will be like the wheats of today....and the wheats of today will be worth like 50 bucks a piece.

Hm. Never thought of it that way, Broseph. Good points. Whatever president Obama does, I think we should enjoy the penny while we have it and in the meantime CRH some Wheaties before they're gone!

schris252:

the 1944 is the most annoying one around. I know what jbuck means about celebrating every wheat you have, but come on, I have like at least 20 of them...
