I purchased my first raw Capped Bust Half and just wanted some thoughts. I think it is AU-53/55. I think it has definitely circulated some based on some grime in the date and around some of the stars, etc. **Larger photos

EF-45 not sure frm photos that the surface is original. Possible details grade.

What are you looking at that gives you concern on the unoriginal surface? This definitely is a tough series for me to judge. I didn't see any hairlines under the loupe, but the "look" of these coins seem to be all over the place.

The opinion is based on what seems to be little bits of crud just in a few nooks and crannies of the devices. This is almost exclusively the result of a cleaning which didn't get into the smallest areas; if it's just "honest dirt" I'm expecting to see more of it if it's that thick in some places. There are exceptions to every rule, though, and this one might still be deemed market-acceptable even if cleaned. TPG's are a bit more lenient with coins this old, understanding that almost 185 years of history for one coin means a lot of chances for things to happen.

For me, either way, this is clearly an AU50+ coin even if it's a "Details" grade.

Are these your photos or the sellers?

I'm thinking that this coin may just barely make it to AU-50. Not sure of the originality of the surfaces.

My photos. There are very few nicks or marks. Coin looks very attractive in hand. Probably a tad darker.

I paid $275 so I paid enough for it. I was hoping it would grade without details. Debating whether or not I should ship it back.

I think it's in the AU to MS range, I'd like to see much larger photos however to get a more accurate grade.

New, larger, and hopefully improved photos. I bought it thinking it was AU. After looking at it more I think it is close, but honestly I have trouble telling what is strike and what is wear. My thinking was it might have been a weaker strike with little wear due to the lack of nicks, etc.

Not sure if this one will grade AU in my humble opinion.
If it does you scored.

If not and it grades EF you broke even.
Either way looks like you did ok.

You have it hand, only thing that matters is if you like it!

This is a tough one. I can't say definitively if it's been cleaned or is market acceptable to a TPG. I would give it 50/50 shot at a details grade. If you're planning on selling, I would roll the dice. If you just want to take care of her till you kick the bucket, I wouldn't worry about it and keep it raw. Let the wife/kids deal with it!! That's what I do.

To me, it appears 50/53 details but the surfaces do not look original to me (it may be the images).
