A guy at work who also collects coins brought in a big bag of wheat pennies and told me I could have them for $0.02 each as he just isn't that interested in them. He told me I could go through them and keep whatever I wanted. I told him I would probably take them all.

One question, though. He is getting into metal detecting and so some of them are ground finds. I'd like to clean them up a little just to get some of the dirt off. He said I could do whatever I wanted with them.

I am thinking just a little soak in soapy water? I don't think it is worth messing with acetone or olive oil for these common wheaties.

Any thoughts or suggestions?
Rest in Peace

No. Don't use soap and water.

I dug up an old cent in my garden (years and years ago) and there was so much dirt on it that I couldn't read the date. So I brought held it under the faucet to wash the dirt off and it disintegrated in my hand. It literally dissolved and went down the drain.

There's a product called Verdi-Care, I haven't tried it but I'd try just about anything before I would try washing one again.

I have Verdi-Care but it is worth more than the actual coins!

If a cent dissolves in your hand, it was probably beyond help anyway...

This isn't a Verdi-Care job. Given they're ground finds (with the associated assumption of environmental damage), I don't think I'd see much objection to soapy water unless you can find real value-added features on the coin. However, first just soak in plain water. Don't undersell water's ability to work on its' own - there's a reason why oceanside cliffs erode.
