I have recently come across this odd looking 1983 Penny. The Y in Liberty on the obverse looks skinny, Lincoln's neck doesn't seem to be printed all the way, and there is what looks like a die crack on the reverse between the E and D in United. Just want to know your thoughts on this one. Thanks.

The Y looks over polished.

It was polished to remove some die clashing. That is why the Y looks weak. This was very common but go ahead and keep it as a nice example for your collection. The crack on the back is also very common.

The 1983 dies were a real problem for die clashes. The over polishing John mentioned is the cause of the thin "Y". The more a die is over polished, the thinner the devices become. (The devices are tapered to allow the coins not to stick in the die. When the fields are worked over, the devices get thinner) I've seen this on another year:

Seems the localized polishing was deepest in the areas around the bust on these two dies. Must have been a very strong clash in these area on these two dies.
