that's something I've been thinking, since on some of my coins and of quite a number on ebay either one side of the coins are considerably more worn off than the other or a particular spot on 1 side is unusually worn in contrast to other parts on the same side. Could any form of circulation or maybe storage in a wallet/ coin purse back in the day or in some other forms of storage by collectors account for that? I personally don't think it's possible to such a degree but perhaps there's something I don't know?

Also do Mercury dimes not have entirely smooth field surfaces? up till now I've been seeing dimes with quite grainy fields, although I've only ever bought or browsed for them in one seller's store and a reference picture on ngccoin.

Imho, there's two main reasons for uneven wear:
1. Stored in a roll: imagine the obverse of one side pressed against the reverse, and you can see how some wear patterns happen.

2. End rolls: Usually, on open-ended rolls, you can see circular wear only on the exposed surface.

For coins that are completely smooth and even the reeds are missing on the edge, people around here say they are casino coins.

but would that be the case only with modern or maybe classic US coins? for example there are 50 pfennig and 1/4 kreuzer coins selling that have very localized wear and that's like on details hardly 3 mm wide by maybe 6mm long. and the other one has just horrible wear on one side as if someone held it against a belt grinder while on the other side but within the same spot it isn't as bad.

Casino coins is just a figure of speech I presume? pardon my ignorance by the way.

A coin which is not completely flat will wear very oddly.

Casino coins are just that - coins which have spent their lifetime going through slot machines. They rarely leave the building as patrons prefer their payout in bills. It doesn't take long for the machinery to wear the reeding off.

One should be careful to dscern between "wear" and "weak strike". They can look similar. Peculiar patterns of weak strike can also be a sign that the coin is a a fake. But to be sure we all know what you're talking about, post pics of suspicious coins, or links to ebay auctions.

here they are. in the case of the 50 pfennig there is pretty much the same wear on the details on both sides but something about the reverse seems like it's been intentionally worn further.

I'm pretty sure there should be sharper details here to qualify for better than a VF or XF, or at least for me.
