Hello,

I have noticed black streaks on some coins. Is this some residue from cleaning or marks from something contacting the coin? I see it mostly on classic coins but I saw it on a Lincoln Cent I got in change the other day.

Here's a pic of what I mean. This example is more pronounced than some.

I think the steaks are charred.

The streaks typically come from rubber bands. :)

usually from rubber bands is my experience as well.

The streaks, as in the coin pictured below, are from a impure mixture of copper:
Black-Streaks-On-Surfaces

However, in the bust half in your picture, fadetoblack is most likely correct. Those black streaks are very likely from rubber bands.

Thanks, the marks actually look like rubber bands.

Is this something that is considered environmental damage, which I think means a chemical change in the coin's surface composition? Or, is it something similar to dirt/tape adhesive, which can be removed without damaging the actual coin itself?

Rubber band marks tend to be deep toning and can't be removed without stripping the coin via a chemical dip.
