I know I can't be the only one who buys whole sets of coins for a few choice ones, swaps 'em out and resells the set for as close to the original purchase price a possible. Once I get a bit more familiar with my new digital camera and can do the set justice, I'll post pictures of it. I bought this set this afternoon for 13 upgrades to my collection. You can probably guess which ones. The price for this set was well below what sets of this caliber that only lack the 16-D have been selling for, so I probably won't have any trouble recovering my entire investment after swapping out the 13 coins. Some make only marginal improvements to my collection, but there are 6 or so that make significant improvements. I have done this perhaps 4 times over the past couple years, and the set is really shaping up to be a nice one, especially with the latest additions. Thought you'd like to see these. They are the images from the original listing. That 42 philly looks like the overdate ... but I'm forever hallucinating, so likely it isn't ... but a fella can dream. Chance

That 20-D looks really nice. Another thing that sticks out is the date/mm layout on the folder.

Not a bad strategy, I buy sets when they come my way. Are you buying from individuals, ebay, or other? I mostly buy my sets from auctions or individuals. Also as your collection keeps getting better, you might want to make sure your "good" one is a good quality album (Dansco, Whitman) and not a folder. I have seen many coins messed up by long term storage in a folder.

The 20-D is one of the upgrades that first caught my eye too. My Philly and San Francisco issues are as nice as that one. My set is housed in an older Dansco album, which also includes a complete roosevelt set, through 1964. It had a lot of clad issues in it too ... but I removed those. I just have zero interest in clad coinage. I've thought about adding the silver proof issues to the set however. My buying is limited to ebay, and I seek private individuals selling through that venue. I like to watch for old accumulations from the West Coast. They frequently have more of the denver issues in them. I did buy a lot out of London though. There were a dozen or so great upgrades in that lot of 51 silver dimes. I picked my base set up on ebay about 3 years ago ... and only the 1921 issues and the 1916 D were missing. I paid the handsome sum of 185 dollars for it, and it had all but 3 dimes minted between 1916 - 1985. Those whitman folders have destroyed more Indian Head cents than enough. People lose interest and allow the coins to be stored where it's damp .... and it's over for those coins. Chance

There's no rhyme or reason to the date/mm arrangement. Sometimes its PDS, sometimes its PSD, and even DPS. Chance

I share your philosophy on sets, Chance. Buffalo nickels were may passion though. Error varieties aside, it's a far more doable set in mid-grade, methinks. I tended to match the grades though, F-VF coins, with a half horn or so. I never had a problem moving those well matched sets. In all my travels though, I've yet to see a well matched F-VF Mercury set!

Its going to take me years to get there, but I'm pretty well on my way to an EF-AU set. Its the one coin that I'd like to have a really nice set of. The last few will be spendy though.

Chance ... Given your ability to find bargains, like that trio of Liberty nickels, it may only be a matter of time before you get a big hit that will enable you to make a flip and acquire a higher grade 16-D. Best of luck!

I don't have a 16-D yet... but it's not for the lack of "lookin"
It'll happen when I least expect it ... but I expect it.

Cool idea and that set is looking great! I may give this a try but I'll leave the Mercs to you. :)

I think it is a great idea. I have done the same thing with Franklin half sets except I can never bring myself to sell my cast-offs. I hit one set that had some really nice FBL coins. I am generally amazed at the small price difference between a circulated set and an UNC one. The only problem now is the ones I need in FBL are not going to fall in my lap.

The set pictured here ... is a donor set.My set is significantly nicer than this one. I'm working on my camera skills with the help of the guys in the coin photography forum, and the plan is to swap 13coins from this set into mine ... then I'llpostpics of my set.

Looks like a Whitman Folder. I strongly suggest you take all the coins out of these and put in a real Album, not a Folder. I too at one time tried to make one set of those. however, as time went by and I continuously purchased better grades, I started a second set slowly putting the best ones in set #1. Then as the set #2 filled, I started a set #3. Cotinuously improving set #1, set #2. HOWEVER, this is sort of a illness or sickness. I am now up to set #13 and with a large box of duplicates in 2x2's which soon may be used to make Set #14. Here is an example of what you'll end up with AND if you think the 16D is tuff, try to find a 1945 with FSB's

Nice set Carl. My set is in an older Dansco album that houses both mercs and rosies. The set pictured is a set I bought for "parts". I agree though ... those old one sided folders have destroyed more coins than enough. My set's not the caliber of yours, but I'm workin' on it, and it's got some pretty nice ones in it. I got away from it for a year or so, and now I'm actively looking again. I'm working on this set, and casually keeping an eye out fora handful of Indian heads yet. Here's a "point and shoot" image of my 1916-1919 coins. I will take better pics of the whole set next week. Chance
