Today I took possibly my one-and-only leap into the "unsearched" Wheat penny world. It looked like a good situation on ebay from a brand new (0 sales) seller. She (I assumed she was a woman from her username) claimed she'd been saving them for years. I asked her a question shortly before the end of the auction about them 'really' being unsearched and she assured me that they were.....she'd been saving them for years, and that her daughter who has worked at Dunkin doughnuts for 8 years has been adding all of her tip pennies. So here's my question: How many semi-key dates should I find in 1500 of them? Thanks, Ed

Honestly, if you found any that weren't damaged I would be very surprised

Hopeful that you actually receive a 'truly unsearched' lot ... but tend to be a skeptic about the existence of these. Looking forward to your report after examining the coins. David

Thanks for the replies. Regardless of the results, I'm determined to squeeze my investment back out of it. Either this "new" seller has a really good scam, and has no problem lying through her teeth.....and sets herself up as a new seller each time she wants to scam a few bucks....................or....it actually might be unsearched. If she/he/they are that desperate, that's on them. Burn me once, shame on them. Burn me twice sham................ We shall see.

In these "unsearched" cents you should find 0. She should know someone who has looked through the cents or told her which dates to be on the lookout for. When you get them & search them please tell me I was wrong.

Well if they are truly un-searched you should find some...how many and what shape they are in you will certainly find out. Hopefully you will be lucky and I certainly wish you the best.

Smells like a scam to me, but I wish you the best of luck. People have no problem lying to get money. 0 feedback would be a red flag to me.

I would say there is still a pretty low chance of hitting any semi-keys only because of the provenance of the story. If these really did come from working at a doughnut shop then it's basically just like searching the equivalent of however many bank boxes of pennies it would take over time to get to the amount of years she's saved them. So say it's 25 boxes, for example, I think you're gonna find mostly 40's and 50's and a drastic drop in the 30's, 20's and 10's. I am, however, pretty optimistic and hoping that they are un-searched. Now if a few days go by and she starts putting up other un-searched lots with stories like that, then yeah, it's a scam. Excited to see your results though!

For me....I want to work at THAT Dunk'n Donuts! 1500 wheats in eight years of drawer change! My guess is....they aren't all wheats. Was there a pic of the pile to assure you they were wheats? Otherwise I suspect it will be almost all memorial cents

key date lincolns 1909 S vdb 1909 S 1914 D 1931 S 1922 D
No, I don't think you will find any of them
Semi Keys 1922 D 1924 D 1926 S Pre 1916 with mint marks
maybe ... but good chance .. no
Wheat cents have not been minted in over 50 years. many of the key dates were pulled out of circulation by the 1950's. So even if this lady pulled coins from circulation for the past 20 years, and did not search them .. high chance they would be just common wheat cents.
Just because she did not search them, does not mean some collectors have not searched those coins sometime in the past.
I search thousands of cents in the 60's and never found a key date.
Of course there is always a chance of someone dumping a collection .. and getting key date coins .. I have seen that happen over the years ...so .. there is always a chance.
