Like many here, I'm down to the teens and twenties in my wheatback collection. While I browse ebay and coin shows looking for worthy candidates, I see coins from Xf to Unc that look worn down beyond the grade.

Are these graded differently? Weak strikes?

Any good articles on this part of the series?

Worn down as in the devices are almost completely gone or do you mean luster? Are you seeing coins that are being graded MS, but aren't? I'm sort of confused at what you're asking.

If you're talking about ebay, forget what grade people give their coins.
Grade them yourself.

Higher grade teens and twenties wheat cents in higher grades - especially with mint marks - are very hard to find in nice condition. There's a lot of overgraded stuff out there claimed to be AU or even Uncirculated that is not even close.

There are some dates especially in the twenties that exhibit weak strikes but they should still have some mint luster and usually weak strikes affect only a portion of the coin while wear tends to be more overall.

Here are some examples

These are actually from the ebay store of my LCS of 25+ years. I realize grading is subjective, but seeing this a couple times had me wondering if my standards were too high for these coins ()

I know the 22-D has it's own issues
The 21-S looks XF to me
The 23-S may make it on the reverse, but the obverse?

That's because n ebay they lie about the grades. Don't ever let someone tell you the grade on ebay. You must share it here or grade it yourself.

Those aren't even XF...

*added, the 1921 S looks around VF-35. *

Your LCS may be good people with whom to deal in person, but they've fallen into the standard procedure of "coins go up two levels in grade when listed on ebay."

OK, Thanks for the replies!!

I know not to believe ebay grades, if it doesn't look good enough for my collection it's not going in.
Basically the "don't buy the slab" argument even with raw coins.

I want to keep my collection no lower than XF as much as funds allow and seeing things like this threw me for a moment.
Appreciate the support here at CCF!!

Two grades up? Oh my...those are 3 grades too high.

21 S was used to get a model T out of the mud.

The 22 & 23 are vg and vf (at most).

Keep in mind, the 20's branch mint coins are difficult to accurately grade. It takes a lot of experience to grade them well. The links you posted to ebay are over-graded. They also all look like problem coins to me.
