I recently purchased a 1927-S SLQ and it arrived yesterday. BQGdLtsrc!~~60_3.jpg) When it arrived I took out my loupe and took a closer look at it and there are scratches in the coin under the word "God" and under the word "Trust", you can barely see them in the pics but stand out when viewing through a loupe. This coin was given a F-15 grade. My question is, How many scratches can a coin have and not have the grade affected? I know it is only a F-15 and scratches are expected but I am having second thoughts on this one and I am thinking of sending it back. Am I making too much out of this?

I don't think the scratches are that distracting. In fact, I may not have noticed them had you not mentioned it.

For a circulated coin scratches are expected. It's up to the TPG's to decide if particular scratches are from normal wear and tear. You can return the coin because you don't like it BUT PCGS didn't find the scratches out of the ordinary. So that's about all you can say, "I don't like it".

I wouldn't be concerned about those since the picture had to be blown up for them to stand out.
With that said though if they really do bother you now they'll probably continue to bother you if not bother you more in the future so it's a tough call.

It will be difficult to find Fine coins with no scratches. To get to a Fine state the coin had to go through a lot of use.

As a British collector, if I bought a Fine condition coin unseen I would expect it to have a few scratches - this quarter looks a nice honest Fine to me. On the other hand, I would expect a dealer to mention a deep gouge or a really distracting scratch - and presumably a TPG would too.

It tends to be a judgment call on the part of the TPG. If the scratches are new (with shiny, freshly-exposed metal visible) they will most likely be flagged. If however they are old and not too distracting they will often get a pass, especially for well-circulated coins. I have no problem with this 1927-S being graded as a no-problem piece.

It's okay to have a few. It's not a big scratch.

Nice 27-S qtr! I wouldn't worry about the scratches unless they keep you awake at night.
You can take just about any coin and a magnifying glass and eventually find something wrong with the coin if you look long enough.

You need to decide if they bother you enough that every time you look at the coin you get the 'yipes' and buyers remorse feeling.
To me ... no big deal on an F15 example ... but it is you coin and thus your aesthetic is all that matter here.

After reading the comments I have decided to keep it. My wife is always telling me I like to make mountains out of mole hills and I believe she is right.... This time.

Looks good to me. I think they only body bag coins that have "intentional" scratches like graffiti or some bored kid with a pocket knife. How do you determine intentional scratches? I guess if it starts at one rim and goes to the other or makes and X or looks like a letter carved in it. Not sure why they killed mine unless it showed signs of a previous "intentional" scratch that had worn down over the years.

Yours in on the head. I'm guessing that is why. Plus it's pretty deep.

That coin does have a "few" more scratches than mine muddler, but I can see why you like it.
