 Irish Free State, 6 pence, 1928 The UK was using a .500 silver alloy for their sixpences... the Irish went with nickel for theirs (the silver saved in this way was apparently put into the .7500 fine shillings, florins and halfcrowns, worth more than their UK counterparts). In a couple more weeks, Ireland will be subsumed back into the UK... |

Numisrob, love the Schubert! Gives me a collecting idea - coins with portraits wearing eyeglasses. Not sure how many there are, but Thailand coins all show the king wearing glasses, so that's a start.

The modern coins of Mauritius, since 1987, also display a guy in glasses. Looks a lot like the Thailand king actually (but it's actually somebody called Seewoosagur Ramgoolam with a lot of titles).
I have one of these (a 20 cent I think).
On-topic... one of my 1929 coins was already posted, I entirely forgot about another one until it was too late, and now my 1928 coin had also been posted. I guess I'll try to participate with the years 1927 to 1923 (though the last one would be hard - too many interesting 1923 coins in my collection for some reason).

It must be mere coincidence that the two very coins I had in mind for 1928 get posted early on the day. I don't have anything to add on the 1928 Irish 6d. Yet for the two Austrian schilling Schubert commemorative, I'd like to make an exception, posting another picture of the obverse.  And just for the record: if you like coins picturing music composers, the Austrian 1 euro coin, with Mozart on its national obverse, is about the most widespread and accessible one. He didn't wear glasses though. Edited by Gwyde

Back in the 40's rules were bending all over the place, I did post a 1,000,000 Drachma note from Greece. I do have some years coming up where I have nice paper and nasty coins. The OP does say 'Coin', but there is an old saying "It's easier to beg for forgiveness than to ask for permission." Tomorrow I'll be posting a 1927 "Not Geld note" the only thing I have from 1927, unless we get a ruling from the bench before that. We had an interesting thread about a composer yesterday, Dionysus Solomons, Composer of the Greek Nation Anthem, he looks like Christopher Walken, no glasses but a funny little thread. The glasses thread is an interesting idea, I have gotten so many ideas of my own from this thread. In a few months I'll start working on them. Pushthatbolder had a nice idea that I'm liking, "Let's Get on the Ship, (A thread about Ship designs on Coins" I love the "Please help ID this coin" posts but this type of "Theme Thread" is amazing. Coming back every day to see what's new, the anticipation of the first Saint-Gaudens (Thanks Muddler, she's a beauty), the Morgan's and Barber's are coming soon, it's just a thrill every time I see this post in the active list. @Mysliveryears: The photos definitely bring it out more than what it actually appears on the coin, (not sure if it is the lighting or the white correction afterwards that is doing it)but it definitely has a rose colored tint to it, but a bit lighter than what is shown in the photos.

We haven't seen one of these before:  The second reverse of the George V British sixpence was designed by Kruger Gray. I think it's a very attractive design that fills the coin beautifully. It is quite unusual in having 'AD' for Anno Domini either side of the date. These coins are of 0.500 fine silver, and you can see the copper coming through on this specimen. Edited by NumisRob
