Here is the latest classic Half Cent added to my collection. My quest continues to put together a major variety set of classic head Half Cents. I don't know why PCGS doesn't break out some of the registry sets to focus in on individual types like NGC does. Here's the game. You vs NGC on grade and variety attribution. Quote: Is that a die crack on the lower right hair and the 12th star? No, its a scratch, though it did not warrant a details grade.

I too think it's a Cohen 5 (triple punched 9) as to the grade? VF30 would be a VF35 without the scratch. I used Gregory S. Heim's Quickfinder for attributing Half Cents, it's a fantastic book that allows one to quickly narrow down which variety the Half Cent is by date, he sells them on ebay and it's one book I've definitely got my moneys worth out of in the past few months!

First thought was VF30, but it might have made 35.

NGC is supposed to attribute major varieties, which as some have deduced for this coin is the C-5, 9 over inverted 9. Didn't get marked as such on the slab. Thought that was odd, the 9 in the date is an obvious give away. For those who guessed XF40,

I still think the EF40 grade is pretty generous with the scratches, and the fact it didn't end up in a details holder, I wouldn't resend it in for the Cohen number to be affixed to the label, it might not come back at EF40 or if it stays it may get knocked down to a details grade, the Cohen attribution is easy enough on this one that it isn't really a must have on the label, there are only six varieties anyways and this is the most obvious one there is, very obvious to anyone knowledgeable in Half Cents I would think.

thanks for your thoughts westcoin. Its probably for the best if I just let this one alone. It really is a beauty and I'd hate to see it crossover into a details holder. I can always buy a small sticker and write C-5 on it if I feel inclined. Like you said, this variety is very obvious.
