So I renewed my home insurance, and startde thinking about the actual value of the coins I own.

Usually, there are plenty of sources to determine the value (numismedia, pcgs/ngc price guides, ha.com, ebay)...

But now I have the 1909-O quarter in VF35.
Numismedia says $870 for XF40
NGS says $240 for 35
PCGS says $650 for 35
HA.com hasn't sold a 35, but had a 40 go for $1,900 back in April
And no luck on ebay...

I mean, I don't want to sell it just to figure out its current value. To me, it's priceless, but I can't put that down on my insurance form...

So in general, how do someone determine the value of a rare coin without putting it up for sale?

appreciate any and input regarding this...
oh, maybe it should be in the main forum, move it there if necessary.

thanks

Halfway between a 30 and a 40? Generally, rare coins inflate at a rate of about 7% per annum, so based on the last sale, you could add 7% per annum in value. That's what I'd do... find the last sale of a 35, inflate at that rate. :)

That's another issue...Haven't found a 35 being sold :P.
I don't have access to coinfacts, so can't browse around in there.

Oh, thanks...never thought of teletrade.
but then again, ha.com had a 25 go for $1200 in september.
that's a really volatile pricing, or that teletrade doesn't get alot of attantion from the right buyers.

I should just go with $1500, sounds about right as of now, and update it whenever there is a huge jump or decline in the value

Is it a PCGS one? Sometimes if you look that one up in coinfacts they have some sale histories for that grade

No offense to anybody involved/related to TT, but they typically sell overpriced crap so I wouldn't be surprised to see a nice, original coin go for a good price there.

I think that coin (the one dsfreeworld linked) should have bagged for the scratch behind the neck. so I wouldn't use those results, personally.

That coin is rough! Neck scratched, hair scratched, eagles leg on reverse scratched and it got a clean grade slab.

I guess TPG's do look the other way on key date coins (except mine )

Insurance estimates should be REPLACEMENT COST, not necessarily value. If there was only the 1 VF-35 in the world, the replacement cost would be the EF-40 auction sale. Because that's what you would have to buy to replace the irreplaceable.

BStraus3 brings up a good point. Replacement value.

For example,in another hobby, I have a copy of Action Comics 13 in Poor condition; because the Cover is missing. The book value is $300 (Overstreet)

Sounds good right? Overstreet is the "Bible". Well, not so fast. The Pop on that is 11. Yes, eleven. Eight are in major collections and you are lucky if one comes up for sale once every other year or so. I have several standing offers of $1500 plus for this issue.

So if mine got stolen what would it cost me to replace it? Overstreets $300 value or the $1500 offers that I have in writing for this book? Mind you I'm not selling so the price would probably be a lot higher for me to replace this with only 2 possible copies for sale.

I think replacement value is a lot higher than people think for those ultra rarites.
