Do you collect precious metals in any other form? I've been pricing things like silver bracelets, trinkets, spoons, and rings recently. I haven't bought much yet but I've been focusing on a handful of brands, primarily Tiffany silver in all its myriad forms. I haven't figured out much yet, but I've discovered that an ounce of silver, much like with coins, is not created equal (no eureka-type discovery there, I know). What I mean is, overall, prices have caught me by surprise. Items I've watched have inevitably gone for quite a bit higher than I would have imagined. One of the coolest things I've seen was an antique sterling silver flask in the shape of a fish. If I had to pose a guess, I'd say there wasn't much more than five ounces of silver in it, total. Regardless, it sold for nearly $500. So that's my question: other than coins or stackable-type PMs, what else do you collect that's made of silver or gold?

I browse garage sales for .925 and gold, and have made a little profit so far (no coins for sale yet).
I'm also trying to get little laboratory-pure samples of exotic metals, like indium, gallium, uranium (it's legal to own up to 15 pounds of unenriched uranium in the United States without a license) etc.

I collect jewelry and trinkets too, rings, pendants and the like. I really collect anything metal: copper wire and pipe or sheet, stainless steel anything. Sterling silver too obviously. I used to collect carbon steel too old mailboxes, street signs, woodstoves, bicycles, clothes dryers but I no longer have the space for that.

I have a lot of sterling from metal detecting. Thimbles, rings, trinkets, etc. I have not had much luck selling, the last was a nice looking pair of sterling candlestick holders that I "stole" from an estate sale, the pair for $10. I know that they were a thin foil outer shell, but the LCS gave me $10 for them, "there's less than a half an oz there". Mmm K.
I really like that sterling fish flask traevin.

Other than coins the only other precious metal I'm aware I have is a small rock with two tiny cubes of gold on the surface of it. I found it when I decided to kick a rock and something shiny was on the other side of it...

I always check garage sales and estate sales for PM. I have scored a few times. My most recent score was a charm bracelet with 25 charms all sterling silver. I have not weighed it yet but I am guessing a couple ounces...not a bad deal for ...... drum roll please.....$1.00

Wow, nice ore! I'll buy anything for it's silver as long as it seems ilk a good investment. To be a good investment in needs to be: 1. A good price 2. A good purity 3. Easy to liquidate I find that anything less than 90% silver get a lot less attention. 40% silver kennedys have to be really cheap for me to buy them now a days. I inherited some sterling flatware, I think it was 6 spoons if I remember correctly. They are tucked away somewhere. Very cool pieces. I'll buy jewelry for scrap price if it's nice, but if not I'll hold out for something nicer.

I finally purchased something of note in the "Other" category of PM collecting. I won't receive it until later this week but wanted to share the pics from the ebay auction I won yesterday. It's pretty interesting-looking and the item went for a far more reasonable amount than I thought it would, considering the silver quantity. Metropolitan Museum MMA Art Nouveau Reproduction Sterling Silver Trident Letter Opener weighing a little over 143 grams.

stud722, I actually found a Pandora bead on the ground while out for a walk at a park I typically frequent. I looked it up on ebay and the little bugger was selling at auction for around $40! If the bracelet or any of the beads you got are marked Pandora or ALE 925 (found on the inside of the bead), it's probably pretty valuable.

Hah, those pandora beads are such a scam! I can't believe a marble sized bead of silver can sell for 2oz worth of silver price! I have seen bracelets with MANY charms before. Thats a good way of getting people to rob you. I mean, at $40 a pop, 15 charms alone is $600, that doesn't include the bracelet.
Awesome that you found one though. Great score!

Hate to be a downer but from the above description it sounds like what you have is pyrite. Pyrite has a cubic crystal structure. I used to look for it in the gravel when I lived in Nova Scotia.
