I was poking around for a nice 5 lati coin on ebay. Since they were saved by many families in the Latvian SSR as a nationalist symbol and reminder of a free Latvia, many exist in great condition. However... there are a huge number of these coins in NGC UNC - DETAILS slabs... and all with the same DETAILS! (Surface Hairlines)

So what's up with that?! Could they all be from the same, polished hoard? Could it be a natural characteristic of these coins? Could it be the result of some shady fake-coin-in-slab-pushers who want to make odd, fake surfaces seem natural? Mysterious!

The coin has been abrasively cleaned.
That results in fine scratches that are NOT attributable to die polishing.

I would not say it is the equivalent of being abrasively cleaned, more like a mild wiping that left patches of thin parallel scratches(hairlines). An abrasive cleaning would have destroyed the majority of the luster but all three coins are quite lustrous.

Well one thought is that not all people throughout the years and different cultures have looked down on cleaning like we current collectors.

If what you say is true about them being kept as keepsakes, that probably makes them more likely to have been cleaned, as the people keeping them were less likely to be coin collectors and more likely to want to keep their memento shiny.
