Quote: The "no cleaning" advice, imho, is preventing the preservation of coins that could be saved from further damage. No, the "no cleaning" advice is to prevent "newbies" such as yourself from damaging coins.

@linconguy: take me up on the challenge, or shut up.i think I can clean a coin such that you can't detect it, and be sure I will send untouched coins just to expose your ignorance,

I actually don't call it cleaning.............I use a certain white rag or towel, dip it in Olive Oil and wipe lincolns with it before I wrap in white holders 2x2's ... I don't do this to any pennies that hav MS.. ,,,, Most ef 40's and below I will do though,,but it does depend on the coin....if the coin is worth a buck what can happen the buck can be ruined.........

Lincolns right so relax, its more or less exposing your own ignorance making challenges like that just because you wouldnt be able to tell. The things you think are "careful" arent at all, just like the things youre saying are harmful such as proof hazing really arent

@basebal: exactly! I've collected for years outside of coins, mainly comics and baseball cards, and this is virtually irrelevant

Everyone here is looking out for you so you don't damage your coins or deceive potential buyers in the future. We don't tell each other to "shut up" on CCF. Take high resolution photos of your "conservation" Substantial claims require substantial proof. The burden of proof is on you not me.

Its the same thing with coins, you dont mess with uncirculated or proof coins to improve their appearance.

It's like this, Superhal. That SusanB has either (the images are too small to tell) suffered PVC plasticizer damage, in which case acetone would have removed it completely without ever touching the coin with a tool (and if that's what it is, your effort only hid it; it'll be back in a few months because you didn't remove it), or it's something else which your images are too small to show the damage you did the coin during the removal process. I quite agree with you that what some would call "cleaning" is what I'd call "appropriate conservation," the dividing line being the point at which intervention is less-destructive in the long term than ignoring the problem. It's my contention that you've an incomplete understanding of where that line is, as of yet. Your every post in this thread reinforces my opinion, and if you're feeling cornered, it's because I'm not the only one who feels that way. But as for me, I'm stepping away. You've chosen to ignore my advice - that's your right - and I don't wish to antagonize you further by pushing the point. So, if I can, I'm going to walk away from this thread and let the rest of the membership try to convince you. Up to a point; you're opening yourself up to attacks which we won't allow at Coin Community. However, keep this in mind: there are twenty posts in this thread right now - unless someone else posts before I'll be the 21st - but there have been 320 reads. There are lurkers out there. Newer collectors; people just learning; people who don't feel like posting. People for whom this is the first discussion they've ever heard on this topic. I won't let you mislead them through your mistakes. If you (the one who just admitted to being a newbie) insist upon advocating a course which you know too little about, I will step back in to ensure those reading this stuff for the first time hear a counterpoint from an experienced collector. You do what you want. I apparently can't save you. But I can still fight for the rest.
