Given that I have no idea about grading, what you guys think about this coin:

Is PCGS right,or do they have no clue?

PCGS did not grade it because of altered surfaces.

Could be artificial toning, could be hairlines.

Thanks guys, right, I understand where PCGS is coming from. I just want to know what you experts personally think about the surface (i.e. the best you can judge given the limited res. photographs). Particularly, do you think the seller was maybe justified when they said: "PCGS has this wrong again. They do not understand NFLD toned coins."?

Also, which surface looks more fishy, the obverse, or the reverse?

I would think around AU50 to 55. I simply ignored the seller's comments and trust my own.
That is what I always do, if I am considering purchasing a coin for myself. If the seller disagrees, then we agree to disagree. If the seller chooses to not to sell to me under those conditions, that is OK by me.

Mostly, I may consider slab grading, but is about as far as it goes. Having said that, I usually come fairly close to the slab grading anyway.

Hi blue,

Welcome to CCF... :)

I would say the details on this coin are nice, perhaps a solid EF-45+ or so - but it's obviously seen it's fair share of battle scars.

I have to say that I like colour on coins if toning has occurred naturally and the eye-appeal is good - my opinion is that this toning occurred naturally - and I would give the coin a solid VF-30.

It's not one of the rarer dates in the series - "Trends" lists value in VF30 at about $350 - Newf coins unless rare or in exceptional condition usually can be bought for 1/2 of Trends.

Both PCGS and NGC have "details" grading definitions on their respective websites. Both define their details categories slightly differently. For correct definitions of these please refer to links below. The color doesn't look right to me (too yellow), neither does the pseudo rainbow effect. I doubt this guy will sell you the coin cheap enough (since he thinks it's wrong) to send to ICCS for an opinion.

Toning looks unnatural in the photos.
EF40/45 otherwise.
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...

Thank you so much for your suggestions, guys! I really appreciated it! I sort of almost like the tones, but the price, as you suggested, might be a bit high.

Good morning Gilles.

I have nothing but utmost respect for the old veterans. Having said that --dare I say-- I stopped supporting the campaign as soon as they started associating modern day veterans with that symbol; you know well who I'm talking about, those, who very unlike their forefathers, have no ethics of war, and act out as puppets of oppressive Western regimes; a battle to them is just like playing video games. They commit genocide with their modern joysticks, rape women and children, play out their kinky desires on the people, and come back as heroes wearing their oh-so-shiny medals for a photo shoot with their family. We even churn out coins with their faces on them ...but don't believe me, just do a search and listen it from the horse's mouth.

Just some bad apples, you say? Yeah right! The sheer amount of oppression caused by the West defies it.

Also, don't get me started on patriotism, a concept created by kings and queens (and modern day politicians) so they can be just that -- kings and queens and pocket your money for free (again very unlike those of their forefathers)! Patriotism kills far more people in the world than religion will ever do. And what are you fighting for really? A huge piece of land? A broad variety of cultures that you share nothing with? Huh! Then why not just make the world one large country? The Nazi propaganda machine would have looked so very naive compared to today's delicate ones!

Enough rant for a day. So am I banned now? For not being a slave to the government? For standing up for what those old veterans made the ultimate sacrifice for: freedom?!!

My friend mr blue,

I thinky you maybe will be get the boot here just like that other guy did - you should be more understanding that you cant just make rant like that, even though there's free speech these guys they have to make for family stuff here though.

Have peace in your heart and the mind :)
