Hi,

I am new to world coins but have been doing some reading and I have bought the Krause books for identification. I really benefit, though, from seeing coins in hand. I thought that it would be a good idea to buy some lots on ebay to go through to help me learn. It also wouldn't hurt if I found something valuable! But I guess my main purpose at this time is to see a wide range of coins.

Do you have any advice when purchasing coin lots on ebay? I don't want lots with the same types of coins. What do you look for? How do you know if you are getting a good deal? Are there standard prices per pound? I'm located in the US.

Or, maybe you would suggest a different strategy? Let me know.

Thanks

i bought LOTS of lots & built a world type set of over 3500 different coins in about a year and a half. it was fun but in the long run it wasn't cheap (more so now with the increase in postal rates) but I learned a lot.

on ebay the first couple dozen batches yielded many different coins, but after collecting around 125 different countries the "common" lots stopped giving anything new. had to buy a lot more lots to get past 175 countries, and most of those were in smaller groups (20-40 coins at a time). anything past 175 countries you will have to buy one at a time. if I had to guess I probably cycled through 20,000 coins and maybe found 200 worth $10-$50 each, the rest were 25 cents-$1. if you go this route you are not going to make money.

I've since sold off 99% of the collection and am concentrating on one from each country (quality over quantity)

best suggestion if you want to buy on ebay in bulk is NEVER buy if the seller is using stock/generic pictures. most (if not all) are parking meter rejects or left overs that have been picked clean, and you will get tons of duplicates. these lots go for about $8 per pound (100ish coins) plus shipping.

try to stick to smaller lots, or premium mix (another collectors left overs with a wide range of dates instead of modern common crap) where you can see every coin that you are getting. expect to pay $15+ per pound.

either way have fun and dont expect to make anything flipping the stuff you dont want to keep (in fact expect to loose). if I had to do it again I would start with a few pounds to get my feet wet then head to coin dealers/shows and did through their "scratch bins" (you will get what you want and learn a pile while talking with the people).

good luck & enjoy!

Post this in the items wanted section, I'm sure one will be willing to put together a lot for you without repeats of the same coins for a fair price.

Yes... find a bin of mixed world coins at a real store. That way, you don't have to deal with so many "rejects".

Before buying a lot for (often) less than the postal rate, you need to ask yourself a few questions on what else the seller has tried to get rid of these coins:
-Has he handpicked the more valuable coins and sold them seperately?
-Did he leave the 'handpicking' to customers on a flea market?
-Did he filter on 'magnetic' coins? (Especially brass or copper plated iron; much of this scrap currently is or has been legal tender.)

This pictures a 'worst case scenario' of what you may expect an e-Bay lot to consist of.

Another remark
Living in Europe is a mixed blessing for coin collectors: At the euro changeover, old currency was withdrawn from circulation. You find these common circulation coins quite easily. However the quantities left over are large and often these coins are traded below their former face value.

I always check to make sure the description says that you receive what is pictured. I've had a few where I got totally different coins than the picture.

I have bought lots/pounds before and regret doing so. It's kind of fun looking through them, but now I have a bunch of junk that I do not know what to do with. Not a lot of money, < $100, but it would have been better spent on one attractive coin.
