Hello everyone, I am new here. I decided that I wanted to start coin collecting and I figured I would start with the Lincoln memorial cents 1959-2008. I am not wanting to collect proofs or uncirculated coins or anything like that, I am just wanting to take the best quality pennies I find in circulation into an album (Dansco) My question is, is acetone the best thing to use for cleaning up the pennies? Second of all, is there a specific color that I should be looking for? I have some pennies that look almost brand new (pink) and others that are brown. Thank you for your time.

The color is up to you, really. Some people like the brown patina on coins, while others look for shinier reddish copper color. It's hard for someone to tell you what you should like. I can tell you, in my experience, I have found I like both. I am sure this sounds like I am talking in a circle around your question, but it's really something you'll just look at and decide. And if you can't decide, collect a set of each. The Memorial cents are not rare, really (even the 1960 small date can be found in circulation if you look), and even the 1970-S small date won't break the bank if you end up just buying one. Acetone will be good for removing some gunk or glue or gum or paint or something like that, but it won't remove the tarnish/patina/toning from the coin, if that's what you're thinking about.

If you are doing LMC only you should be ale to complete an all red set except for the 1970S small date from bank boxes / roll searching

The red ones usually cost more though you see that more with the early wheat ones. Like mentioned though its up to you. Reds are the king in terms of price but I personally like a nice brown one a whole lot too. For the memorial set Red shouldnt really be an issue cost wise especially after 64 when mint sets get realitively cheap to look through for them.

to Lincoln Cent Collecting! If you want the best condition coins I would collect the red, lustrous coins. Even the 1959s can be found in Brilliant Uncirculated with some searching. I wouldn't bother with acetone. LMCs are common enough that if you find one you don't have with gunk on it, just throw it back. Another one will be found. Check out the coin roll hunting forum. That's the best way to build your collection from circulation.

In theory it should be OK to use acetone on any metal but in practice I'd be a little leery with circulated zinc. I'd probably go ahead and do it but would select coins that had the zinc plating intact and not clean them unless it was necessary.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

It has both the old and new coins by denomination, and classification....They are all listed--by everything including mintmark,etc....This is a great help to collecters as opposed to Accumulators....Because as yu aquire one of each yu can check mark it as I hav and go on to the next mintmark...I guess that is what it is called a Cheaklist for coin collecters--- About. com ....this is big site...

First off to the community! second DO NOT clean any coin you have. You should consider proofs to put in album as well as the BU ones because they add value to your collection. Also I would look for cents that are blazing red in color. Good luck
