All I can see is an error on the reverse. Looks like a die crack or line coming up from the bottom. Can anyone see anything that would make this appear to be a 1888/7 or other valuable variety?

I zoomed to 200% and see the tail of the 7 under the 8. But, I would NOT buy this coin unless it was in an ANACS or PCGS slab.

There is a couple other die markers for this error coin as well. Google will be your new friend. :)

Well that's my point. We have a loupe and a microscope here along with the coin pictured above. We just didn't see anything to indicate there's a 7 under the last 8. under a microscope it looks more like dirt or something.

I don't see any of the markers for either Snow overdate. With that said, I didn't know this variety existed until this thread, and I had no trouble finding all that information online in five minutes, so I'm going to default to acloco's words about Google.

I know, right?

For those who are playing at home, Rick Snow lists Snow-1 and Snow-2 overdates for this year. Snow 1 is the easier and more obvious (it's the one called 1888/7), with the bottom and top left tip of the 7 still visible underneath the 8. However, that one also has a Cud over the TE of UNITED, and the next-to-last headdress feather is noticeably flattened. Snow-2 is more subtle; all the pickups are inside the loops of the 8's along with the tip of a mispunched 1 coming from the front bead of the necklace. I think one would see at least that latter in these images, but maybe not.

I gotta ask a question here.

I love IHCs, and think some of the varieties are really cool, but why, even if slabbed, bother with a piece you can't tell the difference between it and a "normal" 1888.

I mean, if I can't see it, for me, it's like it's not there.

The 1888/7 is a naked-eye variety:

Thanks for the help. We were left scratching our heads last night when this particular coin went from around $3 to $40 in the last 15 seconds.

Varieties are something we enjoy looking for. Largely because the truely numismatic grade coins are slightly out of our price range :) But also because it's fun to find them.

Thanks for the comments.

Could have just been a foolish bidder; could have been someone saw what looks like the tip of the 7 under the 8 on your coin. Certainly looks like *something* is there. But the other markers for the 1888/7 don't lie. I suppose it's conceivable that there's examples without the Cud - none are known now, to the best of my knowledge - but that headdress feather doesn't lie.

As long as you made no deceiving statements in the auction, just sit back and enjoy the (small) windfall.

As Dave's photo of the Snow-1 indicates, there is also a rim Cud opposite of the E in UNITED that goes into the denticles.
I don't see this in the OP's pictures.

No Cud, no weak second feather (present on the VAST majority of examples), no 8/7, sorry.

EDIT: See the update; OP is the seller... hope you don't have a return policy, they're gonna return it.

Can't do anything about a buyer's feelings after the sale happens.
