Hello,

I recently acquired this coin for a bargain price at an auction and now would like to get everyone's opinion on what it should grade out as.

This coin's photos and discussion as it relates to its method of photography can be found on page ? of the USB Microscope Photographing Coins thread.

The following URL takes the viewer directly to this coin's photos and skips much of the USB camera discussion which is not directly related to this coin:

https://goccf.com/t/88598&whichpage=7#1493276

I would appreciate it if everyone places their comments regarding the grade that this coin should receive directly within this thread and NOT on the USB Microscope Photographing Coins thread.

In summary please use the above URL only to view and evaluate the shots of this coin taken by both my USB camera and my printer/flatbed scanner.

Thanks much,
mdpmedia

Thanks jbuck for transferring the images.

First ... allow me to clarify that this is not a 'coin' ... it is a medal issued in 1925 by the US Mint ... but carries no legal tender (monetary) status.

That said ... most serious classic commemorative fans usually include this medal as the 51st type ...

Your images lead me to believe this example is AU ... amazingly many of these Norse medals can be found in 'circulated' state ... I've seen them as low as AG!

Probably around AU-55 or 58.

Like David said it is amazing how many of these were used as pocketpieces. I have an AG03 in both the thick and thin. And there are at least 2 circ Gold ones.

It's quite illuminating (no pun intended) (or maybe it was) how different a coin or medal can appear based on the lighting/approach used to image it. I know from personal experience that scanning can create very harsh images and can very often not reflect the true appearance of the piece.

If you had just shown the USB camera images, I would have asked about the color and luster on the medal and leaned toward an MS grade if you reported back that it displayed nice unbroken luster. Based on the scanner images, however, I believe I see multiple points of apparent wear on the obverse as well as the reverse.

So, based on the images, I would have to go with an About Uncirculated grade estimate for the medal.

Market prices for these pieces have certainly risen for choice and gem uncirculated pieces over the last five or so years. Is the medal the "Thick" or "Thin" variety? (The "Thin" has a higher value across all grades.)

Per commems' question above, this medal is the 'thick' variety.

Per some research I performed the population distributions for three types of Norse medals are as follows:

A) Thick mintage: 33,750 having a 0.087" thickness @ 0.52 fine oz wt. = 90% silver and

B) Thin mintage: 6,000 with a thickness of 0.065" @ 0.36 fine oz wt. = 90.0% silver and

C) Gold minted (? mintage) medals' content equals .90 fine which should be equivalent to the specs. for a $10 gold piece.

Thanks in advance for opining on the market price of this 'Thick' silver Norse medal.

fyi,

If your "Thick" piece is truly an AU example, I would estimate its value in the $90 to $125 range. You may be able to find a buyer willing to pay more, but a patient collector would be able to find an AU piece in the range I've suggested.
