Hi, This is a low-value circulated coin so you don't have much to lose by trying to clean it. I would first just soak it in warm soapy water to see if some of that dirt will come off. Then I would go to an acetone soak which should help if your coin has organic residues from tape or glue. Then I'd try a commercial dip product like EZ-est coin cleaner. After each attempt I'd rinse well with clean water and then with distilled water. Try to resist the urge to scrub! If you are successful, please post your results and describe what you did. Good luck!

I agree. This is a great coin for experimenting a little with cleaning. I would start off with a soak in acetone (this doesn't damage the metal and you can leave it in there for a while) to see how that works. If not, then try the ez-est or some other cleaner. Do not rub and be sure to rinse the coin in distilled water and let air dry. Good luck. If you decide to try any of these things, please post "after" pics. It will be very educational for our members.

The black looks like tarnish, so soap/water/acetone will not do a great deal. You might try household ammonia as an intermediate step before moving on to tarnish remover. Try diluting the tarnish remover and soaking first, before pasting it on to the coin. If you have to scrub, use something like a worn-out toothbrush, gently.

From the looks of the first photo I think I'd have used RAID on it first. Then followed by a powerful disinfectant, then possibly a small fire. However, your efforts have already shown there was a coin under all that. Congradulations. I myself would be afraid of cathing somethig from that original looking thing.

thanks thq, the coin has been soaking in acetone for about 24 hours now (I've changed the solution 3 times already). No major difference (the black is still there but some of the surface is a bit shinier). I think I'll let it sit in the Acetone another day or so and then post more Pics prior to going onto the next step. Thanks for everyone's help so far.

After about 48 hours in Acetone (solution was changed several times) then a good rinse in distilled water this is the results with no noticeable improvements I guess the next step would be a coin/silver cleaning agent. Image: acetoneobv 001.jpg84.82 KB Image: acetonerev 001.jpg85.04 KB

Hagerty's makes a great silver polish that I believe is still available in an aerosol can. Spray on, wipe off with a microfiber cloth. No scrubbing needed.

The only thing that will help it is coin dip. But, it may come out as a cleaned AU. Little chance of it being an unc under that tone.

Go to Home Depot and get some high gloss silver spray paint. Put it in a new 2x2 and take a picture of it. Post it on ebay as an attic find .."Found it in a box in the attic, I don't know what it's worth but I think it's rare. I got bills to pay so as much as it pains me, I must part with it...opening bid $10.00."

Yea, leaning towards the spray paint option or there is always the belt sander If any thing this is turning into a good experimental coin.
