I heard about a counterfeiter, who decided to get REALLY innovative. He printed bills, each with a $21 face value. He took one them to a teller for exchange. The teller look at him rather wryly, and asked: "How would you like it changed: three sevens, or seven threes?

Go to Walmart and try to spend a series 1928 or 1934 $5, $10, $20, $50 or $100 and see what happens. For even more fun grab some old $5 red seals and some $5 & $10 blue seals. Be sure and get in a check out line that has a very young cashier, or better still, a cashier that might not be from the US.

Holy cow... I mean, c'mon. The COPS didn't think they were real? Were they 18 also? And the forces statement was...
'Commenting on the incident, Baltimore County police spokesman Bill Toohey told the Sun: "It's a sign that we're all a little nervous in the post-9/11 world."
? What the what? I can only imagine that poor secret service guy apologizing profusely for apparently several people idiocy.

It's an older story yes, but nonetheless very interesting that something like this could ever happen.

Quote: It's an older story yes, but nonetheless very interesting that something like this could ever happen. Definitely interesting, not althogether surprising with the way out country has dumbed down (despite all the tecnological advances) over the last century. But it really doesn't surprise me, with all the rediculious laws we have nowadays... Lol, I really don't want to go on a rant about the extremely lacking criminal justice system we have in place... But it's horrible to say the least. But it wasn't that they had never seen a $2 bill, they had, they were worried because the ink "looked smudged" and all the bills were consecutively numbered... I wonder what the outcome was? Anybody know if this guy sued the pants off anyone?

I've told this story before. Some time ago at a local restaurant, when leaving I places several of those baby sized collar coins on the table. The waitress, and sort of loudly, said "Sir, you left some of your kids play money on the table." I've never used them again. $2 bills, baby sized dollars, even half dollar coins are so odd that so many people just don't knoow what they are. Can you imagine what would happen if you tried to pay a bill anywhere with a $0.20 cent coin?

Surprised the cashier even cared. Been a long time since I've seen one that really wanted to help.

Actually today it is getting more and more strange to use odd types of monitary stuff. I wonder if in the future strange credit/debit cards will get similar results.

This goes back to a general fallacy that too many people have. Its some people expect others to have the same concern or knowledge that they do. In this situation, the kids working the register aren't going to know what a coin collector takes for granted.
I haven't seen a $2 bill used by the general public since the 70's. Once in awhile I'll go into a store along the road and a $2 bill is up on a wall as a "look what I have" by the cashier, but not used everyday by the general public.
Most kids today aren't going to be able to spot it because they didn't grow up with it or lack familiarity with it. The older folks will know it or the kids collecting but the average kids growing up don't know about em.
It's kinda funny, but this time of the year I asked a college aged kid, I think last year or the year before what was so special about December 7th and they didn't have a clue. It took a few kids to figure out the answer. The point is, younger generation isn't going to know what the older one takes for granted.
The other point of that article is coin collectors need to understand this isn't like collecting baseball cards, comics, antiques or any other collectibles, this is US backed money you're holding and law enforcement isn't playing around when it comes to money and how its used in daily transactions.
You people want to draw to attention to yourselves by using denominations most people haven't used in 30-40+ years and think its cute trying to "educate" people about the old coinage/currency, well, lolol you're going to be educated that businesses take transactions seriously and law enforcement care how US backed money is used. lol
You can claim, but its US tender all you want, its going to raise an eyebrow.
