I pulled this one out of a dealers junk box for 10 cents, I had no idea what it was at first but after looking around a bit it appears to be a post-colonial 1787 Machin Mills half penny. Anyone know the vlach number on this one? Perhaps its too corroded to even tell, it looks like it was dug up at some point.   |

I couldn't make out any denticles either vinnie.
Machin's issues are probably my weakest area of Colonial Numismatics..I've been wrong before :-)
Diagnostically speaking, the reverse has the tell tale signs of a possible 17-87B...from what I can tell.

Just that the date looks odd for a Machins...just corrosion? Any chance it is From NYC Brasher and Bailey?
I really wish colonialjohn (Lorenzo) would input in these threads. We ALL could learn a bunch from him.

The date of 1787 narrows it down to 5 Vlack-numbered Machins reverses (well, 4 really). I was looking at 87b as well, v. It comes close, but I don't think close enough. We may just have another anonymous British or American Bungtown imitation halfpenny here.

It definitely looks underweight for a regal that's for sure.
Many British made counterfeits exist as well..may be what this is.

Here's the shoulder mail on Xavier's coin, followed by the Vlack 17 obverse. The position of the mail segments relative to each other do appear to be a match. Vermontensium appears to have had the right idea with Vlack 17-87b.   I'm thinking the areas I was looking at on the reverse may have been altered by corrosion. I'll look for some matching diagnostics in other places. |

I was also looking at the mail p but was primarily going off diagnostics of the reverse as it was the only die for 17-87B. The spacing of the date, shield and dot placement pretty much made me go with 87-B and you matching up the mail pretty much confirms it. Not bad for a dime swcoin.ecrater.com
