What are your thoughts on this draped bust half dollar and how would you grade it? Also, the reverse is strange, with not only a crack from the tip of the wing down to the 'E' in America, but also part of the pattern below that area seems obscured. Any thoughts on what caused this?

Thanks.

That crack turned O-114 into O-114a early in the die's working life; the coins without the crack are rarer! In the early years, if a cracked die was stable, the Mint just kept using it. The latest die states of O-114a have an internal Cud below the crack.

I agree with the lister's grade.....VF details uncleaned......Nice doubling on the "T" in liberty
FWIW, I don't ever bid on coins with hidden reserves and people that refer to their buyers as "you really are a mutt you never paid thats why" and "you have done this so many times before ebay butt kisser"

Howdy,

Noticed this one last night. It is the same half that was posted a few days earlier in a PCGS case. Bet he will get more for it now that it's been cracked out.

Fascinating. Good catch, machine20. His images aren't great, but in the "raw" auction I have a hard time seeing what PCGS would have called "graffiti" as well.

Would it have been fair to call it details/scratched?

Possibly - the auction images aren't clear enough for a distinction between "acceptable" and "unacceptable" regarding the visible scratches. I have a hard time seeing any of them as deliberate, though. All the same this is a case of "crackout artist" in the same sense we denigrate them around here. PCGS' opinion ought to have been disclosed regardless of whether the owner agreed with it or not.

This is just my opinion, but I think that some tolerance should be given by the grading service based on grade. For instance, unless a coin is higher grade (XF+), light scratches should be expected and should not be mentioned specifically unless excessive or done in an abusive manner like whizzing. Basically, if the coin shows conditions that most collectors would consider typical for a coin of a certain grade, it shouldn't be mentioned.

As I am on my phone, I cant say this with my usual confidence. BUT I see not one thing that would lead me to believe PGGSs crud. I have seen plenty of coins come back from them with BS details grades that just were not justified. I would never have sent it to them in the first place. But if I had and that coin is what it appears to be to me, it would never have lastedml more than a minute in that plasrtic.

In the current pics posted on ebay you can see numerous marks behind and in front of the head. They are old and blend in with the surfaces. I can now see why PCGS gave it the graffiti grade. Whomever buys it will be able to see the marks up close and personal when the coin arrives. They may be a little disappointed.

I couldnt see it on my phone either but on the computer the left obverse field is definitely marked up pretty good while the right side doesn't have much of anything.

I cant really think of a way those lines could have gotten there naturally. Even though PCGS can be extra tough when it comes to calling something details I think they had that one right after seeing the larger zoomed in pics.
