I was wondering is this an official Royal Canadian Mint 2012 Silver Maple lead $5 coin?

As I noticed the 2013s have a symbol on them that the 2012 does not.

How do you suggest storing this coin so it does not get tarnished?

I paid $23 for the 2012 coin was that a good price?

Thanks

I'd say that's a decent price.

And that 2013 has a privy mark on it, they come like this as well, the one you bought is the bullion version.... That 2013 is a reverse proof (different finish) I believe the one you posted is the F15 privy mark. I think there's also a "year of the horse" one as well. And they also come in the bullion version for 2013 as well...

*edit* just to set your mind more at ease you can see that they made different ones for 2012 as well. Here's my PCGS 2012 reverse proof dragon privy.. They cost more than the straight bullion ones.

Thank you NathanASE

The dragon one looks quite nice.

Where would I get a hard case like in your picture?

Thank You

The lack of privy mark is certainly not the issue. There are privy marked SML including the F15 and the Year of the Horse (2014) as well as several others. There is a good list here.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadi...r_Maple_Leaf

However, the vast majority of SMLs are not privy marked. There were 18M produced for 2012 without a privy mark.

The coin you purchase appears to be a run of the mill SML bullion coin but it seems to be a odd looking to me. You should probably weight, measure it and test it with a magnet to ensure that it is real. The finish doesn't look right to me but it might just be over exposure on the pic.
Normally they look like the photo on the wiki page about.

That said, spot is roughly $21 so a 3 dollar premium is ok - not great....assuming that it really is silver. Dealers would typically sell these for %23.50-25.00 today.

@CC-Ottawa

So a real one would be rough looking with lines running through it? And not be smooth looking?

Typically, yes, these have a bullion finish. The ebay coin looks almost brilliant proof to me which raises a big flag.

You will likely get some other opinions here from some of those more versed in these coins (and better able to spot fakes) and of course there is also the bullion forum. They might be able to give you a better answer.

Added: there was a recent discussion of a coin from ebay - unfortunately the listing is no longer available to view.

Oops, ya year of the horse is 2014... It's late, I'm half asleep.. Lol. 2013 was the snake privy.

Weighing it would definitely be a good idea. I know for a fact that CC-Ottawa knows far more about canadian coins than myself.. I focus on early US, I just have this one in my daughters world bullion birth year set.. And because I love dragons...

But I thought it was just the photo/scan making it look a bit different... But weighing it would be a great idea just to be sure. Again, I don't know enough about these to really say real or not, I was more fomenting on the privy mark... But I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will be along soon..

As for the case mines in... It's graded/slabbed by PCGS...
But there are many holders available for these.. Air-tights etc. I'm not 100% sure but Coin World slabs probably makes one in this size and there basically the same as the PCGS slabs.. I keep most of my raw US coins in them.

I don't really want to get into the topic of toning... I'll go on a rant and its late and I'm tiard, lol.... ...

Thanks everyone for the help so far. I asked for more pictures.

Is there a scale that you would typically use to weigh a coin? Or any scale is good?

If it's any consolation, if it does turn out to be fake, IMO it's a really good one. That said, there are some really good ones out there and sometimes you need some drastic measures to be sure including chemical testing.

Here is a link to an example of the plastic cases http://colonialacres.com/product/37...38mm?ref=464 Best to buy from a local coin shop if you can as the shipping is a killer on cheap items like this.

I don't remember any plain, proof finish SMLs from 2012 and a quick check through Charlton didn't turn any up. If it's legit then a dollar or two over spot for silver is a normal price.

Only IMO - the coin on the top (2012 SML) looks like fake - it doesn't show the bullion finish.

If I would a stacker - I would buy the SMLs from big dealers such Provident Metals, APMEX etc...

As partually bullion collector, I buy the bullions from proven ebay seller or Colonial Acres.
Yes, I pay higher premium, but the coin that I want suppose to be in the best condition.

Capsules:
(this is for SML) you may buy 38mm Lighthouse capsules from Colonial Acres, or go to Air Tites website and select H38 capsules direct fit - read carefully - they have excellent charts and explanations.

There is no Standard Proof Finish SML, the only one was issued in the 1989 as Standalone (in the wood case) or in different sets.
Reverse Proof finish usually have Privy SMLs (but 2013 F15 SML has bullion finish).

Hope it will help.

@waloshin, by chance did you take a pic of the ML that you bought at a different angle. CC_Ottawa makes a good point about reflections in photographs. It looks Brilliant, but that could change given a different angle.

The OP's coin is a legit, regular bullion issue silver maple leaf coin.
