I have a 1940 D Nickel it has an error on the back side on the dome. I would like to know what the value would be.

Looks to me like it's laminated. That means like the layer peeled back.
In that case, nothing more then face value.

Looks like PMD (Post Mint Damage) to me. Probably got nicked by something in its 70+ year life. Again, just face value.

OR it could be that someone at the Mint tried to modify the dome and made a mess of it.
I too think it's what is called PMD or Post Mint Damage. Hit by something
