Hello everybody. Just registered with this great forum it sure is a valuable source of information. I need some help. I inherited my grandfathers coin collection. Literally hundreds of coins. It has taken me days, they were all in this big box nothing labelled at all! Some great coins in there, mostly French, German, British, and Indian, with a few American coins (including what I think is something known as a 'Liberty Cap' from 1793) However, I am down to the last few, and I am having particular trouble identifying these 4 coins. I was hoping somebody might be able to tell me what they are? The photos are not the greatest as my camera is pretty basic, I have sharpened the images in a photo programme to try and improve the clarity. Here is the first of them. I will upload the other 3 in posts following this one incase I go over the file size limitations. Thanks so much for any advice! David

Here is coin number 2. I can make out the letters QVIES in the first photo. It looks like a bishop holding his staff, with a church to the right of him. In picture number 2 it is of somebody playing a harp, with a crown to the left of the head. I can make out the letters FLOREA around the outside.

And coin number 4. First photo shows an interesting scene. It is of 5 or 6 buildings in the water. They look like towers or small castle turrets. Something or somebody is blowing at them from the top right hand edge of the coin. I can make out the lettering EXTINGVETVR LVCERNA IMPIORVM. On the other side (last photo) there is a double coat of arms, below a large crown at the top. I can make out the letters ANCORVM ET NAV ..... LVDOVICVS XIII DC (presume that is Louis 13th?)

Check your camera for a MACRO setting, and if available, turn it on. I am sure many people will be able to recognize some of these spot on, but a few of us cannot. =\

Here's the last one, a jeton of Louis XIII: http://www.cgb.fr/aunis-et-la-roche...50643,a.htmlThis was actually a Royalist propaganda coin, concerning the Siege of La Rochelle. That port city was a stronghold of the Protestant Huguenots in Catholic France in the 17th century. The king's forces besieged it in 1627, and it finally succumbed after 14 months, largely due to the effort to block the mouth of the harbor at the lighthouse, preventing food and supplies from entering the city. Some 22,000 residents perished. This coin shows the harbor lighthouse at La Rochelle, its light being blown out by the holy breath of God, with the legend, "the impious light must be extinguished." A beautiful coin. Beautiful and terrible.

Wow, you guys are good! Thanks, that is definitely coin 4 identified an exact match. Seems to be quite rare? I want to seperate the rare/valuable coins from the everyday stuff to get them insured (if they are valuable). I will try and get clearer picturess of the other 3, I will borrow my mates camera as mine is basically a point and click! Thanks for the welcome btw, good to be here!

Thanks Philadelphian, interesting to read. As you say fascinating yet tragic.
Have to say going through all these coins is very intersting, so much history attached to some of them, particularly the Willam and Mary coins I have found.
Modern coins just don't have that interest in comparison.

The first one of Vespasian may be ok - hard to tell - but the others look decidedly dodgy (ie fake) - particularly number 4. I'd rather see proper photographs before commenting further though.
