Wow.. although I wonder why it took the mint so long to produce new dies since these were in such bad condition.

Maybe, but the early Mint's output suggests that dies continued to be used until they physically failed, however shattered and crazed they became. It adds character to early American coinage, don't you think? I could defend it as typical Philadelphia Quaker frugality, but the only thing I feel obligated to apologize for, as a Philadelphian, is all of M. Night Shyamalan's movie output after "The Sixth Sense."

I love the cracks, but man those rims have defintely seen better days, I have a real hard time seeing past damaged rims.
