By far, the ugliest obverse is the current nickel. I like the original Jefferson design, but the new ones are terrible. Why is Jefferson staring me like that? Could they have found a less flattering picture of him to use for this coin? I hope this coin is replaced soon.

As for reverses, none of them stand out to me.

I vote the Peace dollar as the ugliest obverse, looks more like Medusa than Lady Liberty.

HA ! What coin is it that the obverse has Miss Liberty sitting on an urn in an awkward position? Is that a porcelain throne?

Humm reverse - I think the Indian Head cent is one of the worse. Commmmmon. the word "one cent" surrounded by a wreath? Wheres the glamour in that ?

You can't beat those lame SBSS rounds, or certain Franklin Mint Liberia NIFC... very tacky.

I am a bit surprised by some of the answers thus far. I am going with the Washington quarter for the obverse. I don't think any reverses really stick out.

Hey, Susan B. was a classy lady and I kind of like her stern gaze on the dollar. And the Peace dollar's Liberty is great.

Sticking to American coins because moving into world coins would leave me unable to answer because I'd have to look at everything.

The Barber series Liberty is bar none the worst obverse in American coinage, period. Jefferson wishes he could look that bad so he'd have something going for him.

The Wyoming reverse for the Quarter is just plain silly and probably my pick for ugliest, though Wisconsin isn't far behind.

I've said it before, but I'll say it again.
I reckon this is the ugliest obverse in the world.

I have to agree with SaintRidley that the design for the Wyoming quarter was pretty bad.

Ugly? Perhaps. Silly? I have to disagree.

Being their state emblem, the had little choice how to depict it...

The wonderful world of unofficial Roman coins can help here.

Heres a Constantine by a British tribe:
Ugliest-Obverse-And-Reverse?

Heres some of the Usurper Carausius:

Ugliest-Obverse-And-Reverse?
Ugliest-Obverse-And-Reverse?

Constantius II, 2 minims from a barbaric hoard and a follis found seperately, these coins being minted by the same forgers. You could be forgiven for thinking the follis is Nero:

Ugliest-Obverse-And-Reverse?
Ugliest-Obverse-And-Reverse?

Magnentius:

Ugliest-Obverse-And-Reverse?

Not so many ugly reverses for the romans. A lot of poor engraving though. If I had one, id post a picture of a gorgon obol.
