Got this one yesterday for a buck, thinking it looks like 1864-L.

What do you think, is it L ? (look at this RPD ).

Thanks for looking .

$1? Holy cow. Anyway, this is an 1864-L Snow 2. This RPD was only on the 1864 with L, so it is 'with L' 100%.

Robbudo...could it be a Snow 1 ? Wish I could find Snow's 1856-1909 attribution guide. Can't find it for sale anywhere.

Nope, definitely not Snow-1. On Snow-1, repunching of the flag on the 1 is just below it, while in Snow-2, it is about 40% down the 1, exactly where yours is. Interestingly, Snow says "a counterfeit die made from this obverse exists." There are two die characteristics on the counterfeit, and due to wear, you can't see the regions of interest on your coin. But yours has seen so much real circulation I'm sure it is real. =)

You can buy an electronic version of Snow's guide for any given year for $4. There are 20 different 1864-L Snow varieties so it might be worth it for this year.

Thanks robbudo ! I did find a book last night on ebay for 4.75, not Rick Snow but I understand he's pretty good....A Buyer's and Enthusiast's Guide to Flying Eagle and Indian cents, Q. David Bowe .
