I saw a set of coins on the shopping channel today. It was a U.S. quarter and a U.S. quarter planchet along with an actual working die that used to strike quarters. While reading the description I noticed it sayd the die was grinded off, so now it is basically a hunk of metal. I know that they did this for security reasons but in Canada we just stamp the die to prevent further use. Anyway I just wanted to hear peoples thoughts on this. Feel free to call me Will.

They are defaced by the removal of the design mostly. There are numbers on the die. But basically it is scrap in my opinion.

That's what I mean, the design is the only reason I would buy it.

I have a Lincoln Cent die that was not entirely ground off. A small part of the design is still there. I think we're going to give it away at the FUN show.

Too bad I don't have an image of that for my educational library? I would like to see that.

I'll get you one. It's just a tiny bit left though.

That would help others to get how much may have been left on the die.

it's a shame...because I find old dies fascinating. They would be educational and a source of revenue if the Mint didn't destroy them so completely.

So you have to track down one of the dies from the 1996 Olympic coins that they sold. Those were defaced just by grinding a narrow X across the die face. Most of the detail is still visible. Problem is those dies are expensive.

Yes I agree, in Canada there was a 1956 silver dollar die that went up for auction. In stead of the design being ground off it was just a couple stamps in to the die.
