Ok, so this coin was interesting. In hand this coin has a lot of luster. it has some great toning starting to happen. However, I couldn't tell if it is MS or not. There are some points of detail that are flat. The area of Liberty's ear and hair right above are flat. On the reverse, the chest is pretty flat. The wingtips are flat. The talons and center wreath and arrows area are flat. You can see it all in the pictures. The coin doesn't seem to have been cleaned, and it looks great otherwise. The luster doesn't break at all in these areas, and other areas like above the eye and cheek have a lot of luster. I felt like it was just a really worn out die that struck this coin, and decided to spring on it cause I liked it anyway. Any help or comments would be appreciated. Let me know what all you wonderful people think!

This is weird... it looks like it hasn't been cleaned... probably just a weak strike... MS-64 was my first thought, but I don't know how the strike would effect the grade.

MS63 from here and I like the subtle rim toning, nice fields, very pleasing coin..

Besides a very weak strike, this one appears to have some very light circulation. I'm at AU-58 on this one.

Weak strike and appears to have circulated a bit, or an MS coin handled to much by previous owners. AU58...

Yeh this coin is a tricky one! It seems to be MS but then it looks like it might have been lightly passed around. But, then you look at the spots that are flat/worn and there is luster! Either way, night-hawk nailed it, this coin is easy on the eyes and is very pleasing. I appreciate all the input... the LCS had it at MS63... I haggled a tiny bit and got it for lower MS pricing, because I love the way it looks. I will see if anyone else chimes in on this one...

I'm also not sure I could go full MS on this one. but the other than the weak strike the rest of the coin is remarkably free from big dings and gouges. AU55/58

I tried to take new pictures of this coin showing it in a different light. I appreciate everyone's input, this coin is just kinda neat and driving me crazy with regards to if it is MS or not. It just seems to have very little wear on it at all... but I still am not sure. Hopefully these new pictures may help some people see what I am talking about. Either way. AU or MS, I still think it is a neat Morgan and I appreciate all your input.

Looks like it has a little wear on eagle's breast -- AU58

That's one of the worst Philadelphia strikes I've ever seen. A TPG would wimp out and call it AU58; I'm calling it Mint State. Note the flattened talons and legs - by the time wear does that to this area on a Morgan, the neck and leading edge of the wings should also be showing considerable wear as well. And for the hair above the ear to "wear" so much, the cheek will lose all the little marks seen here. Look at the cheek of some circulated Morgans and you'll see what I mean.

I was hoping you would chime in SsuperDdave! So I can live with the consensus grade of AU. But, I am glad you see it as MS. The leg and talon and wreath flatness are so bizarre..... I definitely will compare the wear on the leading wing edge and cheek marks to a circulated Morgan next time I can get a hand on one. I feel that this coin is unique because the strike is so bad. I wonder how it happened? And as I said earlier, in hand it actually looks real nice otherwise. It is no GEM, but it sure is an ugly duckling.
