I just acquired a nice 1883 Liberty nickel (No Cents) and wanted to see what the CCF Members had to say about her. I am fairly certain that this is a FS-1302. Thanking you in advance!  (Sellers images)   |

Looks like just a bit of wear on the hair beneath the LIBERTY, AU58.

I have to agree with the "barely circulated" opinion, based pretty much solely on the wreath. If I were building an "AU67" collection of terrific coins which just happened to spend a month in circulation, this would be the Liberty nickel representative. This one was a slam-dunk 66 when Uncirculated. |

That is an amazing coin, there are so many things going on with it. The die cracks are cool but look at the fully struck stars. Every single one of them are fully struck and defined. I do not see wear on it (but my image grading weak spot is in this type scenario), I really want to say IMHO it is uncirculated. If you get it for AU money it is time for a happy dance. |

I'm on board with that, Kelly, but between the wreath and the little bit of crud I *have* to default to a "slightly circulated" opinion. Based on the obverse alone, this coin hasn't circulated, but if one side circulates the other side kinda has to go along.  |

I see what you are saying, I had not thought about that before. When I was looking for circulation, I was looking at wear but not for other signs of circulation, like crud. Still, killer coin, upon which I think we ALL agree.

I feel that she is a nice representation for the "No Cents" Cherrypicker Variety in my 7070. The light wear on the reverse is what I saw as well, and I picked it for a really good price.  I would suppose that this one would fit into a "every(wo)man" collection? I dunno, man - your detail image has me seriously reconsidering my position. Can you shoot something similar on a horizontal line through the wreath and ER in AMERICA? I want to see a bit of that crud and the leaves there. |

I really like the coin but is the photographed yellowish "color" of the coin an actual representation or is it a more natural silver looking in hand? The coin almost looks like it has been cleaned as I can see some unnatural toning spots on the reverse between the top of the V and the rim at 12 o'clock.
I really want to say its "unc" but from the color of the coin in the pics I just can't commit either way.

That is - beyond a doubt - a function of imperfect White Balance settings on the part of the photographer. It's something I should have called attention to - I just automatically tune stuff like that out. |

Wow. Inconclusive regarding circulation, but if that color is accurate this one needs an acetone bath. Nickel is subject to both verdigris and PVC; don't know which this is but the course is clear.

In comparing the sellers images (OP) and it in hand, the images are more "yellowish" than in hand. Not so much silver in color, but there are slashes/splotches under STATES and around the V that could raise suspicion. Edited by oih82w8
