So there I was standing at the counter of a coin shop in Austin Texas today (one of the largest). I had called because I am on a quest to locate a 1928-P Peace dollar. To my much surprise I learned they had eight of them!! And one graded by PCGS as XF; not great, but not shabby either. So I rush down there and start looking them over one by one. Then it hit me... half of them were obviously badly cleaned and had no luster or brilliance to them at all. I have an MS66 1923 Peace dollar so I know how they can shine.... anyhow, I digress. So I find two ungraded ones that don't look tampered with and I would generously call them XF. I then ask how much for those two plus the graded XF. I was quoted (with tax) a price of about $800. Not bad. Not Great. But considering I have been trying to find JUST one of these for a long time now and to now have three ok ones sitting in front of me.... heck ya! So I pull out my Master-debt Card and am quickly told.... "Sir, we are cash only..." Ok, it is 2013... never mind. So I rush to an ATM and unbeknownst to me my wife had withdrawn our daily limit... So there I was staring at the ATM's refusal... looking... staring... hoping for some Jedi Mind voodoo to happen... nope. I drove home. Edited by jolson 12/05/2013 11:56 pm

Bummer!
I know shops that are cash-only on bullion but will take them for numismatics. I also know shops that will charge a credit card fee like the online bullion dealers do. It's too bad they didn't have a better option for you.

I thought it was a funny story... I will try again this in a couple of days (I work the next couple so won't be able to get there)... or maybe I will send my wife on an errand... She kind of owes me. Right? LOL.

Maybe the numismatic gods are protecting you from -- something.

My B&M is cash only as well. Cash, no tax, price always below the listed price. Just the way I like it.
Good luck in your quest, I remember when I got my 1928, good times.

Wow... That stinks. Lol, my wife does that all the time.. I get to a store, low and behold no money available...
And I second that none of my LCS's accept plastic of any kind... I was quite upset to learn that last year on my bday when my wife bought me a visa gift card to buy coins with as she never knows what to pick.... And none of the stores accepted them...

My coin shop does that as well, I asked them why they are cash only and its because of fraud. You buy something very expensive then cancel the credit card transaction and they are out in the cold on it. It's odd but I guess a lot of coin shops do that especially on bullion which can fluctuate daily.

Go to ebay and you can find some slabbed ones by PCGS, NGC or ANACs. There are chinese fakes of key dates so would hate for you to buy $800 worth and find out they are fake...

Yeah. It sucked. Lol. One was slabbed so pretty sure that one was not a fake. As for the other two... Who really know. I was willing to risk it though as the average price wasn't that bad.

You could always have run to the bank and withdrawn the money and gone back to the store.
How many branch locations does your bank have?

Interesting. I have never had that come up. They do as upstate described for cash purchases, but all gladly accept plastic at the listed prices plus tax. I have to agree with your thought of this IS 2013 right? Vendors have recourse with cancelled charges. I have sent in copies of signed receipts many times to prove the charge was legit.

It may be old fashioned, but ... After many months of slow negotiations with dealers I have gathered a few who will take my personal check if I do not have enough cash. But, in this day and age, NOT to accept a card for an $800 purchase is uncommon. Still, each and every dealer is different. Cash does give advantages, but trusted dealers will cut me a break.

The coin Gods were trying to tell you something.... "Do not buy 1928 Peace dollars today!"
