Well I have decided to begin my search for one of the Sacagawea's that were placed in Cheerios' boxes in 2000. I have never seen one for sale, as I have the cents, but now understand the dies have been deemed "Patterns" and are not the same dies made to strike normal circulating Sackies. It would appear to me, at this time, a few thousand non-collectors out there are sitting on a very highly desirable coin and don't even know it? How do we get them back on the market and just what price would one expect these coins to bring? Just curious and if you have one, I am interested!!!

IIRC, I just read (Coin World?) that the Cheerios variety has the same reverse as the dozen gold ones struck and sent up on the space shuttle.

I didn't even know bout this till this post . I wonder how many of these coins ended up in the dump because they thought it was a fake or a toy coin? . My family has eaten cheerios on & off for years and I never noticed the coin-- . What is the visible difference bwt this coin & the standard one? Some I bet are out there mixed in and spent, if lucky you can find 1 in circulation or in a 2k roll--[:0]

Here's the Cheerio's lowdown...... 2000-P Unc. Mintage unknown. Up to 5,500available in Cheerios packaging. "Reverse of 1999" Pattern formerly known as "The Cheerios Dollar". Even though these were released in Cheerios cereal boxes in January 2000, it was not discovered until February 2005 that these are actually an early Sacagawea dollar pattern.

I got plenty of Cents from the Cheerios boxes but did not know that they put Sacs in as well. I seem to remember an ebay auction for one a couple of months ago. Nohope587

It's not an error. Technically it would be a variety but it's more important than that and the term isn't a good fit since varieties tend to be unintentional or inadvertant. Type comes closer since it was made at a different time than the other coins. I believe "prototype" comes closest so have been referring to it as the prototype reverse. Eventually everyone will settle on a term.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

They are actually calling the coin a PATTERN at this time. None the less, they have escalated into bidding wars and thousands of dollars is out of my reach. I can only hope to run into one at a flea market or antique mall! Wouldn't that be a dream?

Just so everyone knows, we have been paying $2500 for raw examples (still in package) and even more for top graded examples.
