I have a book on early large cent varieties but not Half Cents. Does anyone know what variety this coin is? We could also have fun and do a grading guess while we are at it. I will say up front it is designated "corroded" by NCS.

If my pictures are not clear enough let me know and I will take better ones.

Thanks

Okay, I see now. The T in cent is definitely leaning to the right instead of left. So I think Cohen 8 is right. Very cool, an R5 is a nice surprise.

Btw NCS gave this a F details Corroded

Thanks for the help

I'm new at attributing these but I get C9, doesn't the top left of the 1 in fraction need to be separate from the left stem to make a C8? If the top left part of the 1 in the fraction touches the left stem it's the C9. I can't really tell from these photos though.

I'm using the fantastic "A Quickfinder for attributing varieties of business strike United States Half Cents 1793-1857" book by Gregory S. Heim

I've got a all the good Half Cent books up on ebay now, Cohen (new & used) and the ultra rare Manley - hint, hint! just some extra copies I've picked up. (shameless plug).

C8's "1" is a *bit* further away but still close. As you say, tough to tell in these pics. The extra berry below the F in OF is diagnostic for C8, though, and visible here.

C-8 no question. It has a heavy leaf reverse that makes it 1,2,5,8, or 9. The only ones that have the 4 close to the bust are 8 and 9. The outer berry below the F in OF and the prominent outer berry below and left of A2 nails it as C-8.

THanks for the lessons guys! I find it amazing that so many super low grade pieces can still be attributed in the Half Cent and large cent series. I have a long way to go. I finally got a 1794 Large cent, that I need to get some photos up and see if I'm on the right track to getting close to an attribution #. I only wish I could afford to collect 1793 & 1794 coppers! Should have started this a couple of decades ago when they were still somewhat more affordable.

From what I can tell sunnyd23's Half Cent is fairly well struck and for the most part problem free, with a lot of the details still visible. A sweet old copper Half Cent.
