Hey everyone,
I personally find die varieties fairly difficult to ID but with this forum I think I've gotten quite a bit better... Over the weekend I purchased a huge lot of assorted Canada large cents, and there were 5 1859s. I think there are 3 different verities here and I think I ID'ed them correctly but I wanted to make sure from the experts :) Thanks a ton!

P.S. I pulled out 2 07-H's, a 1900, 4 1890-h and like 40 other Victorian dates- One of my best hauls in a while!

Wow.. Nice pick up..

I'm not familiar with the varieties of the 1859 large cent but, I'm sure one of the experts will be along soon to help you out.

I've got a few of these too, and never can seem to pick the varieties.

You have the W9 and the N9...varieties ..

.... and the bottom pic looks like ..a DP #2. ..

If you could add large clear and closer pics of the date's and "flat on" and not tilted. We want to see into the last 9.

You could have W9 over 8 in there. Good job..!!

Bill...where are you...?

Yes straight on photos help a lot. The Haxby site listed below should also help. Ed

Coin 4 is Haxby reverse P13. Missing stem 10, wide vine break at leaf 7 and DC at leaf 8 make a positive I'd. This reverse is paired with two possible obverse. 74 or 74a. Ed

The second coin could be Haxby reverse J9. If so there should be a DC through the last A of CANADA. Ed

Your last coin looks very much like a Haxby J22 Reverse, based on the DC to Leaf 8 and leaf 6.
http://www.vickycents.com/rev-j22.html This reverse is also paired with two obverses 64 and 64a. ed

Wow ed, that is awesome site- I knew there were a lot of people who studied the 1859 varieties but the sheer number of them are crazy... I have enough trouble with just the main varieties! I will defiantly be adding that site to my favorites and gradually trying to learn a bit from it... I'll try to upload some more photos later today (depending how this snow turns out) but thanks so much for the help so far guys!

The large cent collectors here(me included) would have a lot of fun searching through that pile of coins..

Keep posting more of them with "honking" big and clear pics..Both sides too..(pair them up for us)...please..

The second coin is Haxby PC59-352 http://www.vickycents.com/rev-g5.html

The third coin is Haxby PC59-74a1 http://www.vickycents.com/obv-o74a.html (note DC between Canada and Regina) The other photos are still a bit too blurry to be sure. ed
