I unfortunately lost my pocket piece after 2 years of work. It was an overstruck in proof finish Peace dollar celebrating our local coin clubs 75th anniversary. The design didn't lend itself to showing wear and I always kept it in a pants pocket by itself but I did drop it in a bank parking lot once and it fell out of my pocket one while fixing the shop truck and it got a little scraped up. After a while the trim bumps and scrapes seemed to smooth out some and it started to develop some nice brown to purple toning around the devices which makes me really miss it. Anyways I was on the Bay and found a seller with a bunch of commemorative silver dollars and picked up a few including a 1989 Congress silver dollar which I always liked the design of and bought for the purpose of a new pocket piece. Then I spied this weary 1986 Ellis Island from the same seller that unfortunately had been mishandled in the past and bought for $2 over melt. Well they came today and I just can't bring myself to beat up the Congress especially since all of the current ones for sale on ebay are asking $10-$50 more than I paid for mine. The scratches on the Ellis Island are form me trying to wipe off the fingerprints AFTER I had already committed to making it a pocket piece and subjecting it to much worse future wear. If I ever find my old pocket piece I will throw them in together to expedite the wear. Edited by jack jeckel 12/09/2013 11:58 pm

Awesome! This week I lost my pocket piece -- a 1982 Washington Commem. Ironically, I had been thinking of retiring it before I lost it... but I was too late.
Thinking I may carry both modern 90% commemorative halves -- Washington and Bill of Rights -- to expedite wear.
I like your choices!

Neat pieces, I really like the congress dollar. I've never seen one of those. Losing pocket pieces sucks. I recently lost an 80's proof Kennedy half That I had been carrying around for a bit over a year. A friend gave it to me and it had lots of corrosion from being exposed to water in a basement safe. It was starting to look really cool. I'm still hoping to find it lying around somewhere, I thought I had lost it about 5 time before only to find it. But even if it has been lost I think it's cool thinking about someone else finding it and keeping it.

Sorry to hear you lost your previous pocket piece, but it looks like you have found suitable replacements.

losing pocket pieces stinks! Especially when it can take months or even years to get that look again. I actually started carrying less change in order to minimize risk. Now I carry my 1993 canadian silver dollar, a 2012 grey cup loonie, a bicentenial half, and a 1941 new zealand penny, along with various change I get to expedite wear. I'll post a pic of my silver dollar later. I also really like that congress dollar!

That 1989 Congress silver dollar is spectacular! I don't blame you for wanting to keep it pristine. Love to see photos as time goes on. Was playing with the camera on my phone and my most recent pocket pieces. Both have great eye appeal, very bright. The SBA has real depth, some cartwheeling remaining. And a 1976 Kennedy half that came from a Bozo The Clown bank made of PVCish material, left the coin coated in plastic and utterly ruined. I can't believe the restoration to this coin! Even the edges are cleaned after a couple years.

Quote: I have been looking for a pocket piece for a few weeks. Any suggestions? I would say you have to figure out what your motive is. Do you want to carry around a coin that you can show to non numismatists and give them a history lesson? Do you want a coin that has some sort of personal ( inherited or otherwise) or historical relevance to you (classic or modern commemorative from your state or event)? You also have to ask yourself are you comfortable losing it as it might happen. I didn't think I would lose mine but it is either somewhere around the house or in the washing machine somewhere.

I've only had 4 boxes to CRH search through since Wednesday :( Today I went through my bins and bags and piles of cents I've set aside looking for varieties. After cleaning off most of my CRH dump table (which I had cleaned off 3 weeks ago as well) my pocket piece magically returned :D I had thought the dryer ate it up as the last time I saw it was in my pants pocket on laundry day. It seems to have hazed up some from sitting so I will give it a few weeks back in solitary in my pants pocket before I introduce it to it's replacement. I had it in a pocket all by itself for 2 years and it hasn't really worn much albeit I sit on my butt all day at work so maybe introducing a new friend or 2 will speed up some wear.

I have quite a few pocket pieces. They get beat up pretty badly by Canadian nickel and steel change. All of these coins started life with either nasty blemishes, wirebrushing damage, or a bad cleaning, and I am trying to rehabilitate them: - Austria, Vienna Philharmonic 1oz silver bullion, 2011 - Austria, 50 schillings (Karl Renner), 1970 - Netherlands, 1 gulden, 1940 - Third Reich, 2 reichsmarks, 1939A (cleaned by my own hand when I was younger ) - Russia, 10 rubles (1150th anniversary of Russian Statehood), 2012. Yes, someone wirebrushed this modern coin for some reason. - Sarawak, 1 cent, 1937. 2x2 plastic at the store often covers up a terrible cleaning and they don't label those coins as such... I thought this was MS Red but it was AU Scratched to Heck. - Iran, 1 rial, 1980 (World Jerusalem Day) Yes, my pockets are heavy!

Here is mine: Only recently started carrying it. It's a clad Ike, Denver mint. One of only two I had at the time (the other is in my coin binder, and I've since accumulated a third). Also, when I was a kid, my weekly (or at least semi-regular) allowance from my dad was an Eisenhower (a "silver dollar", as he called them). Plus I've always thought the Ikes are just neat, being such a large coin. Pics don't do it justice. It looks a ton better in person, and I've already noticed it has brighter shine since I started carrying it a few weeks ago.

This is my pocket piece... $22.50 I hate pocket change but this keeps it from flopping around. Plus I do love to see looks when I open a pill container and toss out a few, then the cashier asks, "This is 50 cents right?" I'd love to have a silver round with a lion on it thou. Most I've seen look weird and 'artistic' I'll find one some day I thought about keeping a single half in my wallet but that might make a circular impression in it.
