I recently cherry picked a great looking 1884-O VAM-23A from a lot of Morgans. It is very LDS with a great obverse die crack. From checking with the big two, I find neither will attribute this VAM although VAMWorld Census shows five were attributed by PCGS and the discovery coin by NGC. Can I assume that ANACS is my only option for grading/attribution. Being an R5 VAM it appears to be a most premium coin. All thoughts/opinions as to grade and TPG options highly solicited. PG

ANACs is a viable option, but there is one more. John Baumgart will attribute all VAMs through his Variety Slabbing Service (VSS). If you have a PCGS or NGC slab without attribution, he will attribute it and apply his label on the reverse of the slab. The VAM collecting community fully supports John's attributions. He's very economical, too.

ANACS and John Baumgart are your only options, IMO, even if the other two listed that one. Heck, you'd be lucky if NGC managed to call it a Morgan dollar, much less get the VAM right.

I'd kind of like to see you send this one to John, unless you think it makes 64 in-hand. It's the latest state I've ever seen, and John might be able to offer an opinion as to how common it is with the crack so large. Or, you could post it at VAMworld for such opinions, and maybe warn John there that it's coming (he's "messydesk" at VWorld).

Added to which, John is a tremendous photographer, world-class, and you might persuade him to shoot your coin.
