Is there a price guide for this coin in this grade?

The coin is MS63 graded by ANACS....but it may push MS64. The only reference I can find to one in this grade puts it at $3000 in MS63....is this accurate? Does anyone have an estimate on MS64?

Thanks!

I'm guessing it's ANACS-attributed?

You're going to have a hard time finding a price for this hottie in MS64. There aren't any, as near as I can tell - your coin is already Top Pop. A PCGS 62 went for almost $1700 on Heritage a couple days ago, so I don't find $3000 for a 63 at all unrealistic.

That is one heck of a VAM to have in your collection.

Well, it's not already attributed.....but I'm 99.9% sure that I have attributed it correctly based on this:

I'm using a 14x loupe, and I've identified all markings using the guide above on my coin.

Well, all you have to do (assuming the line through the O is there) is differentiate the obverse from V227-1 which isn't difficult. That has to be an older ANACS slab - I can't imagine John Roberts letting this one get out of the building unattributed even if the owner didn't specify it.

Yes, it's a very old ANACS slab....back when it was still ANA.

I'm attaching photos....and I think the broken 4th star confirms 228B.

Looks like a 228B to me and undergraded at 63 to boot. Congrats! Looks like you may have a top pop.

Thanks guys!

Should I get it verified and re-graded? I honestly think it will make MS64 or better.

I'm unsure how to advise you on that - don't know if ANACS would be so quick to upgrade their own work. Might even consider cracking it and submitting raw. Either way it'll put a big smile on John Roberts' face to see this one - I don't care if it stays 63, it's the finest of its' variety either way. This is quite a coin.

This is one of the coins that would carry better value in PCGS plastic. If I owned the coin and based on the photos the worst it could be is an MS-63. To prevent PCGS from just crossing it I would send it to them RAW with "NO Attribution!" Let the thing go though normal or regular grading.

Both PCGS and ANACS grade harder on known rare coins, 78 S Long Nocks I have even heard a grader tell a friend that they down grade AU-50/53 to 45 and if you look at a few 78 S LN in 50 you will see what I am stating.

Anyway let them grade it as just a 79 rev 1878 then just send it back for attribution. It will cost you like 30 some dollars more but if it 64's or 64+'s it becomes a very big coin.

Russ makes excellent points; listen to the voice of experience. As a Hit List 40 coin, PCGS will attribute it - and unlike NGC, they do guarantee attributions. I hadn't considered the fact that PCGS has a Registry for Hit List 40 coins. Even though the 227-1 and 228A are lumped together as a Registry entry - the "slashed O" being the relevant feature - all the same a PCGS slab would expose you to a broader group of potential buyers, including the ones who buy the slab and not the coin.

I selfishly bought the coin because I thought it would upgrade to an MS64.....I typically can't ever attribute a coin correctly. I guess I got really lucky on this purchase. Best $175 I've spent in a while!

I bought the coin to keep, so I'm not going to flip it....but, it's piqued my interest in VAMming again! :)
Rest in Peace
