The US Mint announced a new 2013 Limited Edition set. 2013 United States Mint Limited Edition Silver Proof Set™ (LS2) http://catalog.usmint.gov/webapp/wc...ory_rn=10111Do you think the packaging with the coins is a collectors item, or just another way to sell off those left over 2013 silver proofs? |

No , it is a continuation of the 2012 Special Edition set. The set is beautiful, I hope they continue it for the years to come.
Maybe a little cheaper, but I bought it last year and can't wait for it this year.

They need to offer that set in the regular lenses (and without the AGE) so those who buy clad and silver proof sets to fill their Dansco albums do not end up with duplicates of the cent, nickel, and dollars. Quote:

From the pictures the sets looks to have the same basic packaging (just improved within the confines of the same packaging). won't be sure until they arrive in Feb but 2012 shouldn't stick out like a sore thumb.

At essentially $40 above the individual prices ( ASE Proof @ $53 and Silver Proof Set @ $54) that makes for a pricey holder plus you don't get the cent, nickel, or the five golden dollars. I like how it looks, but not $40 worth...though as I stated, ebay seems to bear this out as a fair investment. |

How are you guys coming up with it being worth it? I can probably get them next year for a lot less. The ASE is worth like 65? The other ones might be like 35 to get them all. |

Considering I could sell our 2012's for a decent profit, thats how I would say it is worth it.
To the OP, perhaps a bit of paying for packaging, similar to the Premier Silver Proof sets, but sometimes the OGP does make a difference. I absolutely LOVE the set. I will be getting the 13.

I think it is kind of misleading to say the mint has repackaged "left over proofs" in this set. They sold over 800,000 proof ASE this year and your belief is they have left overs? I agree the price is steep - and I honestly don't know why the mint has put such a premium on this set. That said it is a really nice package. There are those among us who believe a mint issued released collection is worth a little more. Sure you can assemble the same coin set from various other releases - but 10 years from now they will be just that random coins from various sets - and this will be an "as issued by the mint set". If you collect coins in the OGP and are not a fan of the repackaging labels of TPG this is a nice well done set. |

xly - I've kind of watched those prices as well. I have several rolls of them that I bought from various sources when they were released. I think it is a bit different for those - because they are the last issue of the penny in Canada as well as certified the last off the presses. I doubt they hold that value over time - but certainly are high priced pennies right now.

I believe those pennies will hold their value. They are the last. They will ALWAYS be the last. That is something that collectors will continue to want.
As for the packaging. Choose an action figure. Any one. Compare the value of that figure in mint condition but out of the packaging to the value of one still in the original packaging.

The secondary market value of the 2012 Limited Edition Silver Proof Set is boosted by the early sellout of the standard 2012 Silver Proof Set. These two Sets are the only sources for the 2012 Silver Proof JFK Half and Dime (under 400k each). I only had one 2012 Limited Edition Set before the regular Set's sellout.  |
