I picked up $10 in pennies and there were only a couple dozen max newer than 2000. There were several 1989, 1990, 1995 and 1996 that looked brand new. Yet, as old as the average date was, I only found one wheatie. My guess is someone had an old jar of savings, but combed through it before turning it in. Any other guesses?

It could be that, or it could be that there was just one wheat and they didn't comb it. I found some old tore up rolls one time and all were under 1980. There were a few 1980's that looked BU and other nice 70s and 60s. There was only one wheat in this too. You could tell they had been in there a while.

I think that someone dumped an old change jar that was mostly filled in the late 1990's. I doubt it was looked through, so be sure to check for CAM and WAM varieties.

Check a 1000 coins for wheat leaves?
Go to ebay and buy a roll unsearched for $8
They will all be wheats and usually a few Indian Heads

Probably just an old coin jar. My grandfather once gave me the mason jars filled with pennies that were in his basement. It was full of average circulated dates from like 1959-1979, and TONS of BU 1980-1992. He said that he just separated out all the pennies and planned on taking them to the bank "eventually".

Didn't want to add a new topic, so I'll bring it up here under "weird".

I got two 2009 cents in change this week. Sometimes I can go through a box or two of rolls and not find a single one.

Both Philadelphia mints, one each LP1 and LP4. Both obviously circulated.

Yes, I threw them in with the rest of my circulated '09's.
