I think you may have meant the Canadian forums though, not the contest. Maybe a mod will move it. I look forward to this thread!

Does the "Vickie Half show" start today or do you have specific dates planned?

I think you should give people some time before this starts. Maybe a week, or at least a few days so they can get orginized.
Also all credit for the "days of" threads must go to Moe145

Thanks, thedollarman and Nathancrh1, I thought Moe145 had branched out to the Land of the North! Her Majesty, Queen Vickie, is an image that I always have admired. I must be content with a Half Dime or dime. Should be a nice show. While the members wait, perhaps a short explanation of the break in years. Were halves not needed as much as smaller coins? Were a few, high mintage years enough to supply the demands of commerce? Just a little bit of background anyone.

In the early years Canada was not as big (only 4 provinces at confederation compared to the 13 provinces and territories today.) and not nearly as populated as it is now and there wasn't a big demand for coinage until the later of the Victorian era. This being the workhorse coin of era combined with the low mintages (much of the series has under 100,000 mintage with the lowest being in 1890 with only 20,000 made and who knows how many have been melted.) make these beauties go into the 5 and even 6 digit numbers at auction when they come around in high grade. And correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think an MS set has ever been put together by a private collector. Victorian halfs are without a doubt one of the hardest of the Canadian decimal sets to complete. Just a little background information.

Many thanks, Nathan. The population of Canada has always dictated the mintage of coins. Am I correct in this opinion?
