Hi I'm wondering if anyone has ever gone to one of these police auctions? There was an ad in the paper saying that US police were auctioning off tons of stuff. Antiques, jewelry, coins and the such.
I'm wondering if this things legit, actual seized stuff, not some company. Here's the website for the auctioneer.
www.uspdauctions.com
Thanks

USPD has no affiliation with any law enforcement or government agency as far as I can see.

In the downtown area of Chicago and usually at the State building there are such auctions. I've never gone to one but friends that have say they make out like you wouldn't believe. One friend of mine is into cameras and goes to all the camera shows. He picked up a lot of them at that auction for about a fraction of what he sold them for. As to coins I've heard they do have them at that place but usually gone as fast as they open the auction according to people I know that go to them.

It is going to depend on you local and state laws, and your local police departments. Many departments sell stuff at bulk to specific dealers who then resale the items. Some large departments will hold public auctions. If the police is part of a county type government then most of the stuff goes to the pile of equipment, etc. the county will sale.
Most Federal government auctions you have to have a "license" to be a part of. I forget how much the license is.
I know locally TSA did a sale / auction on all the lighters, pocket knifes, etc. they had confiscated at check points. You could purchase lots of like 500 lighters.
Your best bet is to contact your local agencies.

The website looks to be one of the 3rd party type companies some organizations hire to liquidate items. Sort of like your local auctioneers. They should have a local state auction license on file.

So what do they do in Holland with stuff the police or government confiscate? Assuming the material is legal to own.

Same here... At least I have never seen one- I don't think it's legal to do so in Canada. I think the stuff gets confiscated for good... doesn't do good for anyone this way.

When you are enlisted as a registered dealer with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce you can put in an apllication with the Service of Public Domaines, in which is exactly stated the kind of trade you are registered for, so if you are registered for a stamp dealer, you cannot buy coins or anything else you like, no only stamps... then the Service sends you an invitation to go there on a certain date, where someone has done some insurance-pricetags at the stuff, and you have to decide whether to take it or to leave it. It is official, and not opened to the general public. So no auction either, and no bargains also.

Just Carl,
Could you tell me when they have the seized property auctions in Chicago? Do they have a website? That might be a fun way to do some shopping.
Thanks.

Almost all US police, sheriff departments hold auctions of recovered unclaimed items.
This is a good way to get a good used recovered stolen bike, camera etc. Most are listed in the local newspapers.
You can call the departments or cities, counties, states involved where you live and they will tell you when and how to obtain information on these auctions.
NOTE: I have not seen any coins ever sold at these auctions, but I have seen some coins and banknotes inside of some of the items that were purchased.

Thanks. Not sure how to find out. Working in the downtown area I see them occationally at the State Building on Dearborn. I think they have them two or more times a year. They are usually mentioned on TV news but usually after they are over or in progress. If you work downtown, it is difficult to just wonder over there and buy something that may be large. Many, many bikes, TV's, Radios, motorcycles, jewlry, coins and many more items. It would really be a tuff explanation to go out for lunch and come back with a bike or TV set.
