My brother took pics of this and posted them weeks ago. Now that the coin is my possession, I figured I'd try my cam. I think these are pretty good. It has a little oxidation, not sure if I'm brave enough to try and rinse it off with some lab grade reagent water and possibly acetone (all lab grade of course, I'm a chemist). Opinions on grade and if should just leave it alone? I am going to send it to PCGS for grading. These are unaltered pics from my dig cam in JPG mode. Thanks http://www.badthad.com/coin/1909obv.jpghttp://www.badthad.com/coin/1909rev.jpg

Nice coin. However, I'm afraid it might come back in a body bag as damaged, maybe PVC and/or cleaned. I might try ANACS, at least you'll get a grade and more important with this coin an authenication. Just IMHO, of course.

Wait 'til Metalman sees this. Brad, unless someone comes in and calls it a counterfeit, this coin needs to go to NCS/NGC very badly. If NCS can get it nice enough to grade, it's a 4-figure coin. Even in an NCS slab, it's probably worth close to $1000. Beyond what looks like plasticizer damage, the coin is in tremendous condition and if the damage is still confined to the surface it's a vary valuable coin. And, Brad, for the future? Bring 'em down to 800px or so, or get more uplink bandwidth.

Agree that it would be worth it to send to NCS for authentication and conservation.

Thanks for the input, NCS it will be.
Sorry for the large pics, I wanted to be sure I didn't lose any detail or change the coins appearance in any way. I figured that was the best way for everyone to get a good look at the quality of the coin.
If NCS can get it restored, I think will grade at least XF45 based on all the coins I compared it to on HA.com. It's better than all the XF40's and right with most of the XF45's I looked at.
Thanks again!

Hi Badthad
If it helps any the coin appears authentic to me ,, it has one of the unique obverses displaying a die gouge in the lower loop of the B of Liberty , the Mint mark appears correct although slightly blury I can see the split in the upper seriff ,,I cannot however make out if there is a die chip in the upper loop of the S both will be present on a genuine coin .
these markers go along way toward authentication of the coin ,they however are not conclusive,,but make sending it in alot less risky for having it returned as a counterfeit.
Although the coin I think techniquely grades at EF-40 or 45 the damage on the reverse in the form of a smooth scratch which runs from the T in cent to the rim at about 10 oclock will likely hit the coin for at least two points ,,starting at EF-45 that would bring the coin to VF-35 as a net grade.
I believe the coin will respond well to conservation ,,the color may change slightly ,,But will remain a great coin !!

Thanks metalman, I appreciate the comments. While I'm sure the coin is authentic, as my Grandfather was a serious collector, I can't seem to find any info for authentication (such as you described) on the web. Do you know of any websites that summarize that type of info on this coin?
Thanks again!

I have not searched online for a website or page with the info for authenticating coins. all of the info is available in publications ,books, and other sources,, I use PCGS grading and Counterfeit Detection more than the others but I also use Breens encyclopedia of world coins as well as articles published in the coin mags from time to time . Here are a couple of other books that are available . Counterfeit Detection Reference Guide Bill Fivaz Official Guide to Detecting Altered & Counterfeit U.S. Coins & Currency Marc Hudgeons I will have to look around on the net and see if I can find a good website for Counterfeit Detection .
