Thanks for everyone's help. Here is a third coin that appears promising to me: opinions? Should I get this slabbed?

This one looks whizzed on the obverse. Harshly cleaned.

The obverse has been very harshly cleaned. I'm not sure if the coin has much of a premium at this point. Probably would sell like a VF.

Wow, I have a lot to learn, I am feeling pretty intimidated. I spent $54 on this coin, figuring it was at least an AU. But it's only a VF, two grades below that.

Maybe I should give up on collecting. I obviously don't know what I am doing.

Hang in there!

We all make mistakes...trust me. There are threads here dedicated to our screw ups and misfortunes as buyers, sellers, and collectors.

I'm glad that you've found us. Everyone is here to teach and to learn. Feel free to post pictures before buying so we can take a look at them. Also once you get 50 quality posts you can actually buy/sell/trade here with our members.

Good luck to your future endeavors.

No, don't give up; if it were easy, no one would do it. Everyone makes mistakes, especially in the beginning. Even after years, you won't catch every detail. Buying on ebay is enticing, but I think it's a much better place to look and learn the marketplace. Books are the place to start. Now that you're here, settle back and stay a while; if you are planning on making any other purchases, we'd certainly be happy to help you. If you're looking at anything on ebay you're not sure about, just post a link, or send a private e-mail. I promise I won't bid. Learning coins and collecting takes a little time, but the curve really isn't too steep.
