I was looking at buying a couple of the 90% $1 face value bags but there's a $50 minimum purchase and at the end it shows $9.95 for shipping

Is it just me or is that a bit excessive?

Their shipping is excessive for small orders. Thats usually the big complaint against them, whether you order 1 coin for 20 the shipping seems to be about the same.

Check their ebay page, they often offer free shipping on that one.

Their ebay doesn't have any scrap silver and their free shipping options are way too expensive

1). When a company has a minimum purchase requirement they don't want small orders that they deem not profitable.

2). There is no such thing as "free shipping"...... Somebody is paying for it. They either build it in to the price of the item or "eat it".

If you are near a town/city with a B&M coin dealer go there.
That will save you S&H.

OR

If you are close to a bullion dealer go there.
That will save you S&H AND the dealer's mark-up will probably be lower.

I'm fortunate in that I have a couple bullion dealers close by.
The one I deal with is about 35 miles away (45-60 minute drive).

Provident Medals has good prices and if you select an item from their "Free Shipping" section, shipping is free.
